Official: Chelsea the toughest test as AC Milan avoid Champions League group of death

AC Milan learned their Champions League group stage opponents as the full draw was completed today in Istanbul.

Last seasonโ€™s Scudetto win meant that Milan secured Champions League football for a second straight campaign after their long-awaited return to the elite competition of club football in 2021-22 after a seven-year absence.

Milan entered that draw in Pot 4 despite having won the competition seven times, as such a long absence meant that the UEFA coefficient had taken a hit, but this time they were put in Pot 1 as a league winner.

The Rossoneri were drawn in Group E, and the team that were first drawn to join them was Chelsea. They ended up finishing third in the Premier League last season and won the competition in 2020-21, with the added sub-plots of Fikayo Tomori and Olivier Giroud facing their old club plus the Rafael Leao speculation.

The next team drawn (from Pot 3) was Red Bull Salzburg, who won the Austrian Bundesliga again in the last campaign and will be in the group stages of the competition for the third time.

The final team to complete the group is GNK Dinamo Zagreb, the Croatian powerhouses who won the league last season and are experienced in the Champions League at this point.

  1. Milan have the easiest of the draw! Inter were quite unlucky and Juventus allegri would have their hands full with Messi and co! Napoli will also have a better chance of progressing

    1. I see it the other way around. Inter will have the advantage since they’ll be out of the CL come January. Meanwhile we have a good chance of getting out of the group and will need to deal with at least one knockout round after the break. Add to that the fact that their squad is deeper and more experienced than hours…

  2. This is why winning Scudetto was so important. Inter got unlucky..like us last year.
If we play at our best, we can TOP the Group. We can’t underestimate anybody but I feel reasonably confident that we can perform better than last year.
Chelsea will be favoured to top the group for sure but seeing them in Premier league, they aren’t UNBEATABLE.

    1. Agree..
We can finish top of this group. Like you said, Chelsea isn’t unbeatable…
Minimum….we can go to the next stage as runner up…

  3. I quite like this group and it should offer us a good opportunity of qualifying for the next round, When that is said the away matches against salzburg and especially zagreb isnt walkovers either and chelsea obviously can win both fixtures as well but this group overall leaves me with great hope of qualification and maybe even wining it as well. It could have been easier but it certainly could have been far worse as well.

  4. Was a pity there were two teams left in Pot 2 and Milan ended up with Chelsea instead of Atleti but overall not a terrible draw – really shows the benefit of the Scudetto win!

  5. Nice draw. Milan should finish top 2 in the group, even at the top.
Glad we avoided Liverpool, Tottenham and Barca.
Of all Epl clubs in UCL i feel Chelsea is the weakest this year and Tuchel will be fired at some point during the season
Salzburg isn’t a team that should be taken lightly. They got some great young talents led by Benjamin Sesko, the next great striker.
Dinamo Zagreb should be 6 points in the bag

  6. Coco all this teams you are mentioning don’t have record in Europe than Milan in fact we will top the group Forza Milan
