Official: AC Milan draw Tottenham Hotspur in Champions League last 16

AC Milan have been drawn against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League round of 16, the draw in Nyon confirmed today.

Milan secured their progression to the knockout stages of the competition for the first time since the 2013-14 season by beating Dinamo Zagreb home and away (3-1 and 4-0 respectively) and by routing Red Bull Salzburg 4-0 last Wednesday to seal second spot behind Chelsea.

The rules regarding not being able to draw a group winner from the same country (Napoli) or the winner of your own group (Chelsea) meant that Milan were able to face Manchester City, Spurs, Benfica, Porto, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid.

The first leg of the round of 16 tie will be played on February 14, 15, 21 or 22 at San Siro, and the second leg on March 7, 8, 14 or 15. Spurs will play at home in the second leg due to winning their group.

The last time that the two sides met in the competition was back in the 2010-11 season when the London club actually went through. Peter Crouch got the only goal of the tie as Spurs won 1-0 at San Siro in a feisty encounter, with the return game being a frustrating 0-0.

  1. Definetly not bad. In all honestly there is no easy games in ko stages. Tottenham has been good this season but they have made some mistakes along the way. With a lot of luck we can make it.

  2. So much luck involved at this stage. The game played today will be completely different in 4 months. Anything can happen. Both teams could be suffering from injuries especially with WC or could be playing incredibly well. Leao could even be gone.

  3. Aside of the City, Bayern, Real. The only real chance we had was against Benfica, Porto and Spurs.

Considering the record of the Portuguese teams against Italians we can see that their playing style is really treacherous for the side like ours.

Which leaves us with Suprs who are yet to be established as a proper cohesive team under Conte.

So all in all we got the most favorable opponent!

  4. Highly doable draw. It wasn’t PSG, Bayern, RM, Pool, or City. We actually have a realistic chance of possibly going thru the next round

  5. This is the best paired we could get, in my opinion apart from the big guns, it could be worst to draw benfica or Porto they much tougher.

  6. Good draw amd looking at all the other draws it opens up for an opportunity to potentially go further if we can progress from the tottenham fixtures so im quite happy about it.
Hopefully we will spend some cash in january as well to increase our chances to go further into the competition and a good opportunity for cardinale to show his intentions of his ownership.

  7. Welp this is hard. So far Milan under Pioli doesn’t have good records against EPL team.

    1. 1 draw and 1 lost against MU back in UEL 2021
    2. 2 lost against Liverpool last season
    3. 2 lost against Chelsea this season

Let’s see if Pioli can break his bad records…

    1. I can understand the liverpool and chelsea fixtures as a point of referrence but not the utd fixtures because we were pretty much robbed in the final fixture if i remember correctly

      1. Non existent handball on Kessie determined the outcome of the game vs Man Utd. We should have gone through if officiating was up to par…as usual

          1. Yea it was the alleged Kessie handball before Kessie scored the goal. How VAR concluded that was handball I have no clue. Changed the outcome of who went through

  8. I wanted us to face an Italian coach, reason being; I think it’ll give Pioli and his team an opportunity to work with greater serenity because of the familiarity to the tactical approach of the opponents. So, for me, it was either Spurs or Real, so I’m stoked about this draw and I honestly believe that we can go further in the tournament than any statistical analysis might suggest.

The return of Zlatan to the pitch will be pivotal to the team in the knockout stages and could easily be a game changer. It will allow us to have three strikers who can deliver and have delivered in the big moments. Combine that with our young & fearless core and Maignan between the sticks, and we look set for a wild ride come February.

    1. I agree Milanito the possibility is deffently there.
If we can win our combined fixtures against tottenham there are great opportunities to meet some teams that if we beat would send us to the semis.
      club bruugge/benfica
      inter/porto
      eintracht frankfurt/napoli
All teams which we propably have a pretty decent chance of beating in my view.

  9. It was either Tottenham or Benfica! Not bad! We could do this. This Tottenham has never impressed me as much as Liverpool, Chelsea, or City!

  10. Yes the draw is good ,and of course we can beat Tottenham..We have a very capable team of great talent and skills ..With Olivier Giroud in the form he is at present we can go far in this competition..
No one ,or very few believed we would win the scuddeto last season ,but we did and yes much of the reason was the form of this man Olivier Giroud..
I love when Rafael leao plays alongside him ,as when they both play you expect goals ..Form of tonali has been immense ,as is Hernandez ,Tomori also has done well ,.then what about Kalulu ,and bennacer ..
I could go on …We have the team capable of competing with the best ..Keep believing and being optimistic ..Olivier Giroud always does ,,so come on all
    fans let’s be positive..

  11. This could appear to be a fortunate draw, but the Milan formation struggles when pitted against EPL sides, especially sides that tend to choke their midfield. We see how our double pivot find it challenging against 4 or 5 players in the opposition’s midfield even in the Serie A…. Pioli needs to find a fix for this. Milan can’t control the midfield, especially while our attacking third gets too casual, losing balls in attack and failing to track back. And it becomes difficult to get positive results.

Taking this into consideration, with the right strategy, if our players are in good shape, this could turn out to be a good draw. Hoping for the best.

    Forza Milan!!!
