AC Milan 1-3 Liverpool: SempreMilan watchalong and live updates

AC Milan are up against Liverpool in their Champions League opener this evening, hoping to build on the 4-0 win against Venezia. Indeed, with the derby scheduled for the weekend, a confidence boost would be very welcome. Join us for the action!

Paulo Fonseca has made three changes to the starting XI, bringing in Davide Calabria, Fikayo Tomori and Alvaro Morata for the big night. Tammy Abraham, who scored last time out, is on the bench but will surely be ready to give Milan a hand during the game.

Join us for the big game with our watchalong, hosted by Ahmed and Stefano, or follow the live updates from our X feed below. Either way, it will be an exciting one underneath the floodlights at San Siro which, however, unfortunately isn’t sold out for the clash due to high prices.

  1. Super goal by Pulisic but othe thaer than that we are poor. We don’t have any ideas in possession,
Giving the ball away far too much for a CL match…this is easy for Liverpool. Wreckless by Calabria for the goal. Leao is as horizontal as always

  2. Calabria… what a joke. Our right side is doomed for this season. There is a real competition between Calabria and Emerson- who will be the worst RB in CL and Serie A

        1. What can Fonseca do when his defender Pavlovic keeps making armchair errors? Will Fonseca teach Fofana to pass the ball? At least Fofana is trying; RLC is nowhere. I mean apart from the case where he failed a simple pass.

  3. Mike Maignan 8 mil a year!
    Both goals his fault.
On the 2nd one he actually set a pick on Reijnders to free Van Diyk.
As I said before, fans have been too busy criticizing Emerson and not paying attention to how bad Maignan has been on Milan conceded goals this season

    1. How can call a set piece GK faults.. what are the defenders doing with the like of RLC and Pavlovic who are taller and strong in the air?

This has been Milan problem for a very long time

      1. What are you talking about?
They scored from a few meters away. THE GOALKEEPER IS ALLOWED TO USE HIS HANDS. He is the only one allowed.
Those balls should be his every time.
Both goals are his fault and no one else.

        1. If the defenders should have marked their opponents down they wouldn’t have access tot he ball..

from the first goal. take a look at Tomori and second goal where is our giant Pavlovic. , he and RCL could not compete in the air with DIJK

        2. Not a few meters away. Do you need corrective glasses?

And now Mike has prevented another goal by Liverpool (his 4th good stop tonight) and got injured in the process.

Do you make of your mission in life, bashing Milan’s players?

Are you actually a Milan fan? I think you are not. I think you’re just a troll who supports some other team and comes here to stir trouble.

    2. On the other hand, he was excellent with France during the Euro. One wonders if being hammered by shots all over the place and being left alone in front of the opponents’ forwards by poor coverage from his full backs and center backs, has to do with Mike conceding goals. Yes, he could have done better in these two set pieces but sometimes it’s hard when the opponents have a free avenue to head the ball unmarked and when a center forward collides with you and doesn’t leave you space to clear the ball. The six goals conceded in Serie A so far, he was left completely exposed by our defense.

Yes, Mike could have done better, but I think our poor defense gets him too exposed, so I don’t single him out for the biggest share of the responsibility for the goals conceded.

      1. I don’t think so. He didn’t have freedom of movement because Tomori encroached on him. And don’t forget that Mike prevented at least 3 additional goals by Liverpool.

And also, Mike did seem to suffer a bit of an injury, maybe he’s playing under a full 100% physical condition.

Like I said, yes, Mike could have done better but I don’t think the bulk of the fault for the 2-1 score is his.

    3. Gotta disagree.

      First goal 100% Mike’s fault.

Second goal was bad matchups. I don’t know on what planet it is a good idea to have Reijnders mark Virgil on a set piece. He easily gets away from TJ and scores an open goal that is too close and too fast for Mike to do anything about.

Liverpool did not do anything extraordinary tonight. Felt like a very routine game for them against the likes of bottom half clubs in EPL.

  4. set spieces again…. since the days of Pioli no solution.

i see Milan playing with fear and loses ideas on what to do. also give Liverpool room to play from the back while Liverpool front line close in on milan defenders

  5. Puli’s great work negated by two set pieces with both coverage and goalkeeping issues. Terrible. Our defense is a joke. And this time we can’t even say it’s Fonseca’s fault.

Being a Milan fan will require lots of patience this season.

    🙁

      1. I’ve been calling Fonseca mediocre every other post of mine. Yes, I don’t doubt that he is awful.

My point here, however, is to say that our defensive players being unable to stop set pieces from corner kicks or fouls close to the end line, is hardly Fonseca’s fault as it’s been an issue for years. Yes, Fonseca pushed for hiring Emerson who is awful but is not even playing today; he wasn’t responsible for hiring any of the two full backs, the goalkeeper and the two center backs who are playing today and who have failed to defend against these set pieces. He can train defense against set pieces at Milanello but if the players don’t execute, there is just so much a coach can do.

Fonseca is awful. But our defenders are also awful against set pieces and it’s been a problem for years, much before Fonseca was hired.

  6. Guys if i not see good, but i only see Morata and Pulisic try something? We not good at all for big clubs now. Take 2 goals from 5m is disaster. I hope will stay 1:2 that will be great result.

  7. Horrible game so far in our home turf. We just don’t have an answer to their high press. We are just relying on a individual miracle from leao or puli. Sloppy corner defending. Embarrassing so far. Midfield completely lost.

  8. What did I say so many times, I repeated over and over again? Rafael Trappao and Theo are not able to play two good matches in a row. They played well against Venezia, they will play their next good game 4-5 games from now, so after mid October and then their next good game somewhere towards the end of December. Two talented players but mediocre in terms of seriousness and involvement.
I’m sorry to disappoint some people but we have to note after a few matches in which we have already seen Fofana, he is a mediocre player. Maignan is getting weaker from season to season, this past summer they should have sold him and brought in another goalkeeper.

    1. It’s like his 3rd game with Milan’s jersey after not even training with Monaco’s team for weeks due to his sale situation. He isn’t match-fit yet.

It’s incredible that people here are willing to crucify a player so early into his Milan tenure; new team, new league, new coach; ANY player would need some time to gel and adapt, but no, people here will grant no time to Fofana and will already call him mediocre, something he doesn’t have a reputation for being.

Fofana is a good player; he just needs some time.

  9. We have no other option than bring back reijnders to double pivot because we don’t have any other midfielder that’s good with ball we are struggling to build up from back he must bring mussah to replace rlc mussah at least can support the attack

  10. Yeah it’s a bad game but just look at our players when the ball is back, for example at Pavlovici. Everyone is so static, no one moves a bit to create a easier way for the pass. Also look at the Liverpool players in the same time, they all move around. I don’t understand why everyone in Milan is just like a statue and wait for the ball and then to just throw it away. They can’t make 3 passes without losing the ball. It feels like I’m watching an Eastern European league game when they pass around, they have no clue what to do with the ball. It was a really hard to watch first half tbh

  11. Toriani need to come on for Maignan, I dont see him continuing the match….

The management need to pay for it. They have the chance to sign another GK for free and also at a cheap cost as backup but they did not take their chance. Knowing too well Maignan is prone to injuries.

  12. Half the moves this summer’s market had to be done last summer. We can tell this team has little chemistry when they are under pressure. No time to gel.

Hopefully they improve fast tonight cuz this looks like trouble.

  13. Fonseca is done. He had the chance to sub Mike at halftime. Yeah it’s big for Torriani but this should never have happened.

And for that we have our clownshow to thank. Mike being out for potentially for months isn’t worth a couple extra million?

  14. From Zlatan’s usual before the game, through these ridiculous set-piece goals, to our overall display of complete chaos, we are are a complete joke as of today. We have no place in the Champions League.

    1. Everyone spoke of Pavlovic like he was Stam ,truth is he needs to improve in so many areas…just like our team.
Liverpool have just outclassed us, wasn’t expecting such a poor team performance.

    2. Not completely. Calabria as usual left a lot of space behind him; tried to run back and arrived late as usual. Yes, Pavlovic made a mistake but if Calabria hadn’t again neglected his RB position, maybe he could have rescued the situation. Then Pavlovic had to try to recover all by himself and was unable to do it.

The fact is, we have no good RB. Pavlovic has been crucified for the occasional mistake after trying hard for the entire game, and after being left over-exposed.

Pavlovic is far from being the worst player in this defense. His companions keep leaving him to fend for Milan’s life. It’s not easy for him.

  15. There’s no treath for liverpool defender in the box. This team miss Girould.

The crosses are not coming .

Take Morata out and bring Abraham , I think he is more hungry

  16. Well, he’s probably already gone but they’ll wait until after the derby cuz you don’t want to drop that on anybody. I don’t know who they’ll put there, maybe Ibra was out getting his coaching certifications and he’s going to step in and win Serie A! LOL. Forza Milan no matter what though, even this…oof. PS playing with RLC is like playing a man down.

  17. And unfortunately my worst predictions are materializing: the 4-0 victory over Venezia was obviously an illusion, or better said, it was an irrelevant result against a very weak opponent. The start of the season couldn’t be worse and drastic changes need to be made as soon as possible.

  18. With this kind of players in Milan possession, I feel Pioli would do better than Fenseca.

The players and positions they filled are the missing puzzle of Pioli team last season except Emerson and morata and not signing a backup for Thoe and new goalkeeper since backup keeper got injured

    1. I think most humans would expect us to not get anything against Pool and Madrid. It’s the other games that are more on our level. And Madrid is a bit of a mess as well, but no where close to our mess.

    2. And Leverkusen…
      Oh my…

Not to forget, the Derby is looming this Sunday.

Not a fun time to be a Milan fan.

I’ll support the team in good and bad times, but it’s been a sad state of affairs.

    1. OK so now with Sportiello also out, we have a youth goalkeeper, backed up by another youth goalkeeper.

Torriani is good, but the situation is dangerous.

By now, I have very little hopes of making top 4 (or top 5 if Serie A again qualifies for a 5th UCL spot) this season. Our being back to regular UCL participations seems to be coming to an end.

Banter years 2.0 seems to be a more likely outcome than this team recovering and getting good again.

  19. At least Torriani, so far, looked okay and brave.

That goal conceded wasn’t his fault at all.

But I don’t know if I’d fancy going into Derby with no senior GK available at all.

    1. He was noticeably jogging back 5 minutes after coming on, thank god the pass to his man didn’t get made. They were all poor today. If fofana was brought in to protect the back line then dear oh dear I think I see the ball go pass him everybsingke time, he’s like a ghost

  20. Losing to liverpool this way is certain Milan will loss to Inter in the derby and also Marid in the next UEFA champions league match.

They should just focus on making top 3 in the League but with the likes of Atalanta Juve Inter and Roma that won’t be so easy to achieve as well.

Bayern just won with 9 goals to 2…..

    #Forzamilan..

  21. Anyone really surprised by the scoreline? Same problems. Same terrible defending especially on set pieces. Same problems in transition. Takes one pass literally to cut through our midfield and go on a counter.

No one stepping up. Theo and Leao quiet against big teams again. Flat across the field. Milan just gave up.

Fonseca hasn’t fixed anything so far. Literally nothing. Every single problem from Pioli era is still on display.

  22. We brought in fofana, pavlovic and rlc to give us strength in height. Criminal how you concede 2 goals like that then to top it off another slack, soft pass from pavlovic and done on the resulting break. Its a long long season ahead. We are allergic to keeping the ball as much as maignan is allergic to staying fit past tge first round of matches in champions league. 6m no way, no f@cking way not for 60% of the season. Pulisic was out of the game after 3rd minute. Chukwueze obviously not in fonseca plans

  23. Don’t bother waiting till after the Inter game, draw a line under this chapter now!!!

That was pitiful, absolutely toothless. Liverpool looked like they were in a training session.

5 games. 2 well deserved defeats, 2 lucky draws, and a flattering win against the worse team in the league.

    It’s not working is it!!!

  24. Why isn’t anyone talking about rafas input into the game? I watched the whole match and didn’t seem him do anything apart from the shot in the very last mins. Pulisic and morata pushed. Rafa was just losing the ball 🙃 I’m getting tired of how rafa plays now
