AC Milan rise in UEFA rankings to draw level with domestic rival – the full breakdown

By Oliver Fisher -

The UEFA club rankings have been updated and AC Milan have risen further thanks to the results that they have accrued this season, catching a domestic rival.

As our colleagues at SempreMilan.it write, the win obtained last night at San Siro in the first leg of the Europa League play-off round against Rennes means that Milan made a leap in the rankings.

In fact, the Rossoneri have caught up with Lazio, who emerged victorious against Bayern Munich on Wednesday in the Champions League, in 30th place with a coefficient of 54,000.

At the end of last season, which of course featued a run to the Champions League semi-finals, Milan finished in 36th place with a coefficient of 50,000.

Milan – together with Sarri’s team – are the sixth Italian team in the hierarchical order according to UEFA behind Inter (6th), Roma (10th), Juventus (16th), Napoli (17th) and Atalanta (22nd). Fiorentina are in 60th place.

In first place in the new ranking is still Manchester City – the reigning European Champions – with a coefficient of 143,000. Bayern Munich and Real Madrid follow in order, with PSG now off the podium, beaten by Milan at San Siro during the group stage.

Liverpool are in fifth place, RB Leipzig follow Inter in seventh and Chelsea are eighth. Manchester United and Roma close the top ten.

The other good news comes from the UEFA Nations Ranking which sees Italy in first place. According to the new rules for the new 36-team Champions League, the first two countries at the top of this special ranking will get five and not four slots in the next UCL.

Italy are top on 14,285, followed by England at 13,875 and well behind are Germany, who would remain with four teams in the Champions League.

1. Italy 14,285
2. England 13,875
3. Germany 13,642
4. Spain 12,937
5. Czech Republic 12,000
6. France 11,916
7. Belgium 11,600

According to UEFA criteria, in addition to placing first and second in the UEFA Ranking, a country is also entitled to a bonus team in the Champions League by winning the current edition of one of the two main UEFA competitions, namely the Champions League or the Europa League.

However, the factors cannot be combined so if a country were to lift one of the two trophies and be in the first two places in the ranking at the same time, it will still be entitled to five teams.

  1. Actually I think this article is wrong. We should not receive any points for the knock-out stage and in the UEFA database we are still behind Lazio and there were no points delegated to us for yesterday’s match.
