Agent reveals midfielder turned down big-money Milan move due to Barcelona desire

The agent of Thiago Motta has revealed that the former midfielder rejected what would have been a big-money move to join AC Milan.

Motta played for Club Atletico Juventus in Brazil before making the move over to Europe to join Barcelona’s youth system. He was shipped out to Atletico Madrid and moved on the Genoa before playing two and a half seasons with Inter.

From Inter he joined Paris Saint-Germain in January 2012, retiring in 2018 having won 27 major titles all clubs combined.  He has since gone on to coach PSG’s U19 team before returning to Italy to take the reins at Genoa, Spezia and most recently Bologna where he has been since September 2022.

Interviewed by TuttoMercatoWeb, agent Dario Canovi retraced the steps in Motta’s career including his past as a player, and he revealed an interesting anecdote about Milan’s attempts to sign him.

“We have been representing him since he was at Barcelona, at that time he refused a transfer to Milan for a lot of money, they guaranteed him 1.5 million euros a year,” he said.

“This was because he wanted to prove to them that he was a Barcelona player, then he got hurt twice. For a while we didn’t follow him anymore but then we found each other again when he went to Genoa.”
