Allegri admits Milan can ‘play with other formations’ after signs against Fiorentina

Massimiliano Allegri has suggested that there might be some flexibility in his tactical approach, after AC Milan drew frustratingly again.

For the second time in four days Milan drew with a team in the bottom few places in the table, and for the second straight game it was an equaliser in the dying minutes that rescued a point.

Milan created a couple of clear-cut opportunities in the first half at the Franchi, but Christian Pulisic squandered them which is unlike him. Naturally, Fiorentina were the one who got themselves ahead in the second half as Pietro Comuzzo headed in a corner.

Just as it looked like the unbeaten run was over, substitute Christopher Nkunku popped up in the final minute to fire in a pass from another substitute in Youssouf Fofana and rescue a draw. It came after a switch to add an extra body up front, taking a man out of the defence, therefore becoming a 4-3-3.

Allegri spoke to Sky (via MilanNews) after the final whistle to comment on his team’s performance. While the Rossoneri avoided defeat, they still only managed a draw, and missed the chance to go back top with Inter drawing.

Is the approach the problem?

“Unfortunately, there are parts of the match that need improving, because after the 1-1 draw, with seven minutes left, you have to do better. At least you can’t risk losing it; then if you win it, good.”

What’s your take on the table?

“It’s a head-to-head battle. It’ll be a battle to the finish for the top four. We’ll need to maintain consistent results, and it’s only natural that we need to add victories to that.”

Without Modric, Milan wins little

“We’ve improved, because before we suffered two defeats, today a draw. Modric is unique, today he needed a rest, as did Rabiot and Leao. Those who took to the field played a good game and I’m happy.”

Is there any chance of making any changes to the line-up over time or soon?

“It depends on how I see the team, but it has the characteristics to play with other formations.”

  1. “with seven minutes left, you have to do better”

WTF is his current obsession in playing the added time well only these days? You wouldn’t have to chase miracles after the 90 minutes if you didn’t play so fng horribly for the actual 90 minutes.

How about not conceding the first goal and start playing only when the time is running out? All matches don’t have to end 1-0.

    1. How about watching the game? He sent out a team that should have been 0-2 up at half time. No other coach would have this squad second in the league. You’d rather we went out and lost 2-3? The legacy of this club was built on teams with a strong defence. Defence wins championships.

      1. “The legacy of this club was built on teams with a strong defence. Defence wins championships.”

Say something I don’t know. Our defense wasn’t strong yesterday. It wasn’t strong against Genoa either. We were EXTREMELY lucky not to concede more and lose both of the matches.

      2. Defence is the last good gk, strong midfield, strong attack, wins in football if you have the best defense then your opponents have Messi for sure you are the loser

    2. Corto muso. For Allegri, the game truly begins at the 80th minute. Whatever, he’ll take us back in to the CL, which is the goal. Next season probably another top 4 finish. Then in 2027 his contract is up and we can try again to find a coach who brings a better balance between results and style, and who will also bring trophies. I’ve been calling for Francesco Farioli for two summers. He’s 16-1-0 with Porto atm, and came within a hair’s breadth of winning the Dutch title with Ajax in his one and only season the year before. Prior to that, in his single season at Nice, he finished in 5th place and was briefly pushing PSG for first, with Nice having been in 9th place the season before. This guy is a rising star and will probably be in the PL after one more season at Porto, if not next summer already. He uses 4-3-3, is possession base and like a high line, completely the opposite to Allegri.

    3. We struggle simply because we have no real cohesive attacking king unit, we have 2 forwards who are struggling because they don’t really understand what to do and are relying on their individual talents and we are playing 3 in central midfield which we don’t need to give that we have 3 defenders.

We need a real attacking unit, Dodo had the freedom of the right flank as we did not have an attacking player pushing him back, we need to play 3-4-3, with 2 on the wings and a reference point.
We are toothless in attack until we are down and we then push men forward, why don’t we just do that first and defend when we have a lead!!

  2. Corto muso is winning by the nose and winning football. You simply score first and defend to get the three points. Allegri only plays to not lose, he does not play to win. Stop calling his style corto muso please.

  3. No : 343
    Leao-nkunku/fullkrug- Pulisic
    Rabiot-modic/Jasarhi- Ricci/Fofana- salaemakers
    Bartesagi-Gabbia- Tomori/Dewinter

  4. We are playing defensive in the 1st minutes why can’t we attack and score prior defending and the better way of defending is to attack fost the opponents backwards.
    Ok

  5. Change your formation, please. You can’t be playing with 352 through out the season & expect to be performing regularly, you don’t have quality like Inter, so, Change formation in some games, especially while playing teams that sits deep. Play Leao & Pulisic in their natural positions then play Fullkrug at the centre, period.
