Ambrosini highlights worrying issue from Fiorentina-Milan: “More united”

There have been several questions asked about AC Milan this season, and they all fall back to one word – unity. On several occasions, the collectiveness of the squad has been criticised, and the story is playing out once again.

We only have to look back to the last international break to see the last Milan fallout. After a 2-2 draw against Lazio, the Rossoneri were a squad separated, and Paulo Fonseca was a man struggling to claw it back together.

Whilst the story is different this time around, the theme is the same. Christian Pulisic – the penalty taker – took neither of the two penalties awarded to the Diavolo, and Fonseca has publicly slated the squad. A message to the fans that he understands things aren’t good enough or a message to the squad that things are not up to his expectations.

Ultimately, it was a message that undermined his position, and once again, people are looking ahead to the future.

Today, Massimo Ambrosini spoke to Radio Bruno (via Calciomercato.com) about the loss to Fiorentina, and he has offered a worrying conclusion.

“Before the match I thought the two teams were flawed, at the end instead I had the feeling that the Viola had more desire to win. In general, it was not a good match, for both teams, but in Fiorentina I saw more unity.

“The penalties whistled in Florence, only the one for Kean is clear, the others are minimal. If I am Ranieri, what can I do if Pulisic [Reijnders was the player fouled instead] comes at me? As well as Theo Hernandez with Dodò, who barely touches him.”

Adli’s contribution to Fiorentina’s midfield…

“I’m seeing an evolving Fiorentina midfield, they have to find the right square. Adli in that technical context can lend a hand. He has the technique to clear some balls. Gudmundsson must be served on his feet, because then he always manages to create something interesting.

“Bove out of position? In terms of characteristics, I don’t see a problem for him. He’s not a footballer with outstanding quality, but on the pitch, he gives you a lot. In these matches where you have to fight he comes out on top.”

Captains…

“Even when I was officially captain I was often on the bench. The leader can be seen in the group, the players perceive him, even if he’s not on the pitch. He’s the one who always says the right thing at the right time, encouraging the team.”
