Ruben Amorim is expected to be able to call upon two of the leaders of the AC Milan squad from last season: Mike Maignan and Adrien Rabiot.

Today’s edition of the newspaper Corriere della Sera (via MilanVibes) confirms that Amorim wanted to establish a direct relationship with both men from the start, identifying them as key figures in building his vision for the team.

The Portuguese’s very first calls after taking office were to Maignan and Rabiot. This wasn’t a random choice, but a sign of the coach’s regard for the two Frenchmen: the goalkeeper as the team’s leader and point of reference, the midfielder as the centrepiece around which to build the 3-4-2-1.

Perfect building blocks

In Amorim’s mind, Maignan is the ideal captain due to his ability and personality, as well as the fact he is a good fit for his tactical approach given he is fine playing with the ball at his feet. Rabiot, on the other hand, is capable of providing balance, physicality and quality in both phases.

Maignan’s future looks like being with Milan, therefore. The French goalkeeper is tied to the club until 2031 after a renewal signed a few months ago but has reportedly held discussions with several clubs through his entourage in recent months.

These were only exploratory, born at a time when the corporate situation at Milan was chaotic. Maignan has never asked to be sold, and Amorim’s new coaching setup could represent a further factor in the direction of his permanence.

For Rabiot, too, the situation appears to have changed compared to previous weeks. According to the newspaper, the French midfielder has expressed his desire to stay at Milan. So, Amorim has two fixed points from which to start building.

  1. Even Rabiot is tired of Allegri football.

Allegri: Hello mad horse, I want you to join me at Napoli.

Rabiot: I jump and pass. Not possible, mister.

  2. Both of them were sketch in the semis and 4th place playoffs. However they’re also the best we have rn. They’ll also need a break before integration to next season

  3. They are the best players in the Club, but Amorim can consider building a new team without them, Maignan may be want to a more competitive club, Rabiot we don’t know if he will maintain the same performance.
