‘Astonishing numbers’ – Pellegatti highlights Milan’s lack of striker spending with UCL stat

Carlo Pellegatti has stressed his desire for AC Milan to go out and actually invest in a new striker, given the lack of spending in that particular position.

As Lorenzo and Stefano spoke about in the latest video on our channel, there has been a neglect regarding investment in the position of centre-forward which Milan are now paying for.

In fact, a report from SportMediaset highlighted that since 2020 the Rossoneri have spent a grand total of €16m in transfer fees on 11 different strikers. Almost all of that comes from Alvaro Morata’s €14m clause.

The game against Cagliari highlighted the issues. Morata did bag the only goal but he isn’t scoring frequently enough, while Tammy Abraham missed multiple big chances.

Pellegatti posted a video on his Instagram page in which he spoke about the problem at Milan of finding a reliable goal scorer, especially since Olivier Giroud left.

“I went to look at some astonishing numbers. Not so much those from the standings that you all know: Milan are 15 points behind Inter, 14 behind Atalanta and almost 20 behind Napoli, despite having to make up the match against Bologna,” he said.

“From November 9 to January 11, Milan played eight league games and won only two against Empoli and Verona. In the other games, one defeat against Atalanta and five draws. Why, on the other hand, do they win all five cup games against Sassuolo, Slovan Bratislava, Red Star, Juventus and Inter?

“In continuity, perhaps we lack a centre-forward. Looking at the cost of the forwards taken by Milan in recent seasons, you can see that almost all of them arrived at zero cost. Yet Milan are a club that has spent money in recent years as evidenced by the purchases of Chukwueze, Emerson Royal, Okafor, Pavlovic, Musah.

“But we never sign [spend money on] a striker. To conclude, I tell you that in the top 17 teams in the Champions League today, only two teams have a striker who cost less than 15 million euros: Brest and Milan. Incredible! Let’s buy a bomber!”

  1. Can’t be serious, surely. We’re spending >20M per year on striker wages and fees at the moment.

Abraham and Morata aren’t poor players, but maybe not working with the current team setup – they’ve always been players who rely on scoring midfielders and at the moment we only have one of those. Jovic and Origi are bad management choices, but we’re paying for both.

    1. It doesn’t matter how you slice it. All four are overrated and are part of the problem. We need a #9 who actually can score with some consistency and none of these 4 fit the bill. Sure Morfata and Abraham are better then Origi and Jovic. I’d argue all 4 are second strikers and not capable of leading the line as a #9.

For example, Dobvyk would have been excellent for
us. And spending his value on the likes Musah, Pavlovic, Chukwueze instead of an actual striker is far worse of a mismanagement issue. The problem isnthe construction of the current squad. Randomly buying “box to box” midfielders, wingers and center backs instead of a #9 and #6. This has been the problem for at least the last 4 transfer windows.

Also go back and read Jeff the scouts (Moncada) interview about Morata and he says it was an impulse buy. So the “mismanagement” problem has to do with squad construction and personnel decisions. Morata and Abraham are symptoms of an incompetent management. As is spending 100m on players that did not improve the squad. We bought quantity over quality and it shows. Look at the table.

      1. Dovbyk would have struggled. Watch Milan. How many good crosses do you see in a game from the wingers or fullbacks? How many through balls for the strikers.

You can’t expect strikers to come in a make magic. I can also point out how Pulisic and Leao aren’t traditional wingers who are always looking to create. They are trying to score themselves so it means they aren’t always looking to set up the strikers.

  2. The problem is that Milan IS actually spending money, ON WAGES of all these players, but they aren’t spending the money wisely.

Ibra has never been a budget bomber yet he can’t seem to get this notion across to Cardinale and Furlani that you can’t economize on a good striker. And yet, they do every season…

This just shows we are either: (a) NOT an ambitious club; (b) run by INCOMPETENT fools; or (c) BOTH

    My choice is: C 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
