Athletic: Thiaw could stay at Milan as Newcastle begin Guehi pursuit

By Ben Dixon -

In recent weeks, Newcastle United have been in pursuit of Malick Thiaw, but there is a chance that the German defender could remain at AC Milan after a new report has claimed the Magpies’ interest has changed.

Signing a new central defender is a heavily important thing for Newcastle, and this has been proven in their attempts to sign Fikayo Tomori and now Thiaw. However, the Milan duo are not the only two defenders the Geordies have pursued.

A report suggested that Thiaw was part of a list in recent weeks, rather than being an all-out target for the club. However, later reports have suggested that their pursuit of Thiaw was very much real, even if no bid has been presented so far.

Nevertheless, the interest may be all it turns out to be, as a report from The Athletic (via MilanNews24) has claimed that Newcastle are pursuing a move for Marc Guehi, and have made ‘initial contact’.

The English defender is seemingly valued at around €75 million by Crystal Palace, which is nearly double the amount that the Rossoneri are requesting for Thiaw, so if the English outfit chooses a move for Guehi instead, it is imagined a route to Thiaw would close.

  1. Lol. 75M. Thank you EPL, for forever inflating player prices and helping create an existential crisis for European football. 20 years ago a player like Guehi would have cost no more than 20M. In 2002, Milan paid 31M euros for Alessandro Nesta, a world class defender, one of the best of his generation, and maybe of all time. With inflation, that would be just under 50M today. Guehi is 75! LOL.

    1. Like who the f*ck is Guehi and what has he done_shown to warrant such a price? Not even 100 games in epl, no games in any eu competition and a handful of games for the national team, where he certainly didn’t impress..

His career so far has been average and he probably doesn’t have what it takes to become a top tip CB.

      75M folks.

      1. Try watching football. He most certainly did impress, he was one of the best defenders at the Euros and in the EPL. His valuation is absurd, but he’s vastly superior to Thiaw.

        1. Ahahahahaha..one of the best? Seems like you didn’t watch the euros and in epl he doesn’t even make top 10cbs.

Is he superior to thiaw or not that is another discussion and is totally irrelevant to what I’m talking about.

And before you cry some more, you just wrote his valuation is absurd and that is what I am talking about.

          1. You do know that England go to the final, right? Guehi was England’s best defender, and that’s the consensus view of journalists. According to Opta, he was one of the best 11 players in the tournament based on metrics. In the EPL, he’s one of the highest ranking defenders in terms of clearances and shots blocks. None of this is a surprise to me of course, because, unlike you, I’ve seen him play many times.

The reason most of what you post is absolute guff is because there’s a difference between people who know what they’re talking about and those who pretend to know.

          2. Stones was better. Much better..journalist know jack 💩. Articles we read on here daily more than confirm that.

Metrics are fine and all that but not really.

My posts are awesome btw, superb even.

          3. Journalists know jack, but you, the master of bad takes, know better! Stones was better on the ball, Guehi was better defensively.

          4. Yes I know better because I’m not paid to say this 💩 and I don’t have an agenda. Unlike journalists.

What I saw in England was stones being better, much better than Guehi. Guehi was practically invisible and not in a good way.

Guehi isn’t even the nest defender in Crystal Palace, andersen is. Wonder why Newcastle isn’t paying 75M for him.. probably wrong nationality

        2. But is he worth SEVENTY FIVE million euros? Like I said, even Nesta, a certified WORLD CLASS defender transferred in his prime for the equivalent of 50M in today’s euros. So Guehi should be at most 40M, if not 30M, given that he’s not close to have proven himself to be at Nesta’s level, for example. The point is to illustrate how insane transfer fees have become in football due to the crush of cash that has flowed into the PL and certain individual clubs elsewhere, and that we’re right in trying to get the most value out of every single transfer we engage in.

          1. How are you comparing prices from 20 years ago to today?!?!? Nesta would be over €100 million in today’s market and part of the reason for the insane fees quoted for Guehi and Branthwaite is because the clubs are in a strong financial position so won’t sell prized assets unless they get insane money. If you look at Crystal Palace, they turned down big bids for Zaha, eventually he left on a free.

Milan dropped the ball here, Thiaw is garbage.

        3. Buddy, England played some of the worst football ever seen at the tournament. Being abnag average center back was more than enough to look good by comparison. Look at the goals they conceded. He’s worth 30mil maximum, end of. Epl is just brain dead

  2. Sad news for all of us. Watch Thiaw make a mess week after week until next summer while people still will defend him endlessly because “he has potential”. Potential doesn’t get us points and trophies.

  3. 40 mil for Thiaw WOULD. HAVE. BEEN. EPIC.

Darn… Guess we keep him, improve him and offload for more money… to Newcastle… next year 🙂

      1. Improving? When? How? He had an OK start with Milan but was definitely the worst defender last season. “Potential” alone means nothing.

      2. Improving? Did you miss last season? Regression isn’t improvement. Thiaw is crap and he’s not Italian. We hold no loyalty to him. If he has a halfway decent season, hopefully he’s sold and one of the Italian boys from the youth team takes his place.

  4. As to Thiaw generally: Like many others, I’m not convinced, unlike many I’m ready to give him another season. He’s under contract to 2027, so this will be the make or break season for him at Milan. If he does well, contract extension next summer, if he doesn’t we still have leverage in terms of remaining contract to get a decent fee in 2025. Even ~25M, if it comes down to that, would represent a good overall return.

  5. I was secretly hoping they wouldn’t sell him. He had a disastrous last season but I’ve seen great things from him when he started playing for us the season before. He was also great in his Germany debut. That injury against Dortmund ruined him but before that I thought he had potential to be Milan’s most talented defender ahead of Kalulu.

He looked like a gem initially, same as Kalulu. Injuries ruined both their seasons but I wouldn’t bail on them. Let’s see this season.
