Reports: Bayern Munich’s interest in Leao not over – Milan’s position explained

Even though things have gone quiet in the past few days, Bayern Munich are still very much evaluating an attempt to sign Rafael Leao.

Earlier in June, rumours erupted suggested that Bayern have a concrete interest in signing Leao. La Gazzetta dello Sport also claimed that Milan have set their actual asking price – amid Leao’s €175m release clause – and it is €100m.

They hope it will be enough to discourage those interested, because Massimiliano Allegri wants to build around the Portuguese. Given he has never really kicked on to become one of Europe’s elite, the new coach believes he can be the one to help the winger develop even further.

Bayern Munich back in?

Speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, Matteo Moretto gave the latest update on Bayern Munich’s pursuit of Leao, which he suggested is far from being a closed chapter.

“The latest events related to the Bayern world, Williams increasingly closer to Barcelona, Barcola increasingly closer to staying at PSG, lead us to say that the Bavarians have not given up on Rafael Leao,” he said.

“What I will add to you this evening is that probably, towards the end of June, beginning of July, Bayern Munich will understand whether to concretely move forward with an official offer for Leao or not.

“We expect, I expect, that if Bayern Munich decided to go all-in on Leao they would be willing to touch figures around 75, 85 million euros, bonuses included or not.

“On Leao I will also tell you and specify two points: the first is that there are still interested teams from Saudi Arabia, so Saudi Arabia remains on Leao. And the second point for Allegri and Igli Tare is an important player.

“I cannot say he is unsellable, because in the current Milan squad there are no unsellable players, it will depend a lot on the offers, but Milan do not want to to deprive themselves of Leao.”

Calciomercato.com also confirm that the Bundesliga champions have not given up, but they add that Milan are unlikely to accept anything below nine digits (i.e. €100m). Both for the sporting director Igli Tare and for the coach Massimiliano Allegri, Leao is considered a fundamental part of the new era.

Clearly, no player is unsellable for the management if huge offers come in, but everything will depend on the bids that arrive and there is no pressure to sell, given that Leao remains under contract until 2028.

  1. Don’t see any better opportunity to sell him in the future. Nobody will be offering as much. Take it now.
