A lot of the media attention surrounding Italian football is sadly diverted towards another incident of racial abuse that took place, as Romelu Lukaku was targeted last night during the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg.

As he was about to take a last-minute penalty to make it 1-1, Lukaku was the victim of racist chants and shouts from Juve fans, and when he did a ‘shush’ celebration he was inexplicably sent off for a second yellow card.

Ismael Bennacer publicly expressed his thoughts on the incident today, through a story on Instagram: “Racism has no place in stadiums, or anywhere else. Serie A, it’s time to really act. Every year there is the same problem, but nothing ever changes.”

  1. This league is ruining Italian football! It’s time the clubs of Italy abandon the FIGC and form a new league made up of competent directors.

    1. The moment they do what you suggests they will all including their players be banned from international club or country tournaments if they stay put in said clubs.
Figc is a part of an umbrella organisation stretching through figc-uefa-fifa. same for all recognised leagues.
Every club particpating in such moves deserves to be disbanded themselves in my view.

  2. Sometimes you need to not go by the book when it comes to yellow carding. In this case ref should have let that go and just speak to the player. He really shouldn’t hb been sent oddtif you’re getting racially abused

      1. Even though it by the ruleset was an ok yellow card to my understanding as he taunted them back and should have avoided it i do agree on what you say here as the ref propably could have led it slide. Not sure if the ref actually did have room in the ruleset to do that but maybe someone with a better understanding of the rules can clarify that,
Anyways it was disgracefull behaviour from the spectators and they will most likely and deffently should get lengthy bans when/if caught.

        1. The ref can always not book a player. He is allowed to use his discretion. He’s not obliged to give a card. A player can foul a player and not receive a caution. Also can handball in the box and not give a yellow. Seen it happen all the time. It’s totally up to the ref. Again, he can speak to the player. It seems Serie A is just stupid when it comes to these blatant acts of racism. And likely nothing would be done

          1. i agree talking with the player and maybe giving him a formal warning would be FAR better and giving him the 2nd yellow card is counterproductive considering that he was the one being harrassed as its a soft reaction from lukako that comes afterwards so its not that i disagree but there are various aspects to consider like stadium safety not to escalate things (generally speaking) on the stadum. Anyways banning people behaving like this though is a begining at least that i do support so hopefully the figc acts upon it.
