Bennacer believes Milan ‘could have done better’ in ‘difficult’ Atalanta clash

By Oliver Fisher -

Ismael Bennacer’s strike earned AC Milan a draw in a feisty encounter against Atalanta, but he believes the team could have done better and got all three points.

Milan were far from their free-flowing best at the Gewiss Stadium as they struggled to turn territorial domination into clear cut chances and goals, falling behind in the first half through a deflected strike from Ruslan Malinovskyi.

However, the pressure being generated meant that an equaliser would have been more than fair and it came from Bennacer. He picked up a pass from Alexis Saelemaekers, shifting the ball onto his left foot and drilling a shot in off the far post.

Bennacer spoke to DAZN after the game and reflected on the performance of the team and also on his goal, which carries on a trend in which the Algerian has popped up with big goals in big moments. MilanNews relayed his comments.

“I think we could have done better… try to win this match. Atalanta played well, they were compact. It was difficult to find space. The important thing not to have lost, we have to work on mistakes to do better,” he said.

“Atalanta are a team that compact a lot, they play man to man. We must not lose our man, we must be concentrated from start to finish.”

On the new signings: “They work well, then we try to do better for them. Then they play, but slowly it will be better.”

On his goal: “I work in training, then in the game I try to do the same. Sometimes I score, sometimes not.”
