Bennacer provides honest reflection after Rennes loss: “Happy, but also disappointed”

By Oliver Fisher -

Ismael Bennacer provided quite an honest reflection after AC Milan’s second leg defeat against Rennes, admitting that there are some concerns despite going through on aggregate.

Milan were probably hoping for a bit of a quieter night given that they came into the game with a 3-0 lead from the first leg, but that was quickly eroded when Benjamin Bourigeaud found the bottom corner after 10 minutes.

Luka Jovic headed in an equaliser, but Bourigeaud then gave Rennes the lead on the night again when he buried a penalty early in the second half, though again the lead did not last long as Rafael Leao made it 2-2.

Mike Maignan was beaten from the penalty spot by Bourigeaud again as the midfielder got his hat-trick, but in the end the Rossoneri saw it out to secure progress to the next round with a 5-3 aggregate win.

After the match against Rennes and the qualification for the round of 16 of the Europa League, Bennacer spoke to Sky to give a brief assessment of how the game went, with MilanNews relaying his comments.

“We are happy, but also disappointed because if we conceded three goals it means that we didn’t do well during the match,” he said.

“Every team that plays in the Europa League wants to win and go all the way: this is also our goal and we will do everything to go as far as possible in this competition.”
