Bennacer says he might not join Algeria for AFCON: “We will see”

By Isak Möller -

Ismael Bennacer came off the bench against Frosinone yesterday and thus completed his long-awaited return. AC Milan’s main focus is now getting him back into shape, but a decision must also be made on the AFCON fairly soon.

The AFCON, Africa Cup of Nations, will take place in January and Bennacer could be called up by Algeria. If they were to go far in the tournament, Milan could be without their star midfielder until the start of February.

Speaking to Sky Italia after the 3-1 win yesterday, as cited by Francesco Nasato, Bennacer shared his thoughts on the tournament. He admitted that time is needed to fully recover, having just come back from such a serious injury.

“Africa Cup of Nations? I want to find my rhythm again, then we will see if I’m ready. I will also speak with the national coach, I’m coming off a major injury. If I’m not ready, it’s better to pick a player who is at 100%. We will see how I feel.”

Bennacer underwent surgery back in May and worked hard in the recovery phase, returning a bit earlier than expected. However, he likely doesn’t want to take too many risks at this time, with Milan holding out hope that he will remain.

The decision could influence Milan’s strategy for the January transfer window, having been linked with a few midfielders recently.

  1. So glad to see Ismaël back yesterday! Still la grinta, this is what we lack since his injury and Tonali’s departure. If Loftus-Cheek can be the new Kessié, the midfield will improve drastically with these two.

  2. He shouldn’t go IMO and I respect all players wanting to play for their countries – but – context matters – and we waited 8 months for him and rehabilitated him from injury only for him to leave just when he’s healthy again and we NEED him at a critical time in our season? Hope he sees it the same way and stays – esp if we end up selling Krunic we will need him even more
