Bonera reveals details of call with Pioli and why Milan can ‘compete against any opponent’ – video

By Oliver Fisher -

Daniele Bonera believes AC Milan can ‘compete against any opponent’ after Sunday night’s statement win against Napoli.

The first team coach became the stand-in head coach last night due to Stefano Pioli being COVID-positive, and he oversaw a 3-1 win as a Zlatan Ibrahimovic brace and a first Serie A goal for Jens Petter Hauge powered the Rossoneri to their first victory at the Stadio San Paolo in 10 years.

Bonera was interviewed by Milan TV at the end of the game, with his words transcribed by MilanNews and translated below.

“We are very happy. This team is showing that it can truly compete against any opponent, there is the awareness that we are building something important,” he said.

On the key to stopping Napoli: “We knew that playing with very offensive players in the attacking positions they would try to get back on the front foot. We prepared during the week.”

How is Ibra? “When a player goes off the pitch it’s always something muscular. We await the outcome of the doctors for the extent of the injury.

“He amazes for his application and dedication. There is Zlatan but also many examples.”

On Pioli: “We made a video call, the boys were happy and so was he. We hope to have him with us soon.”

On the substitutions: “Coordinated with Mr. Pioli from home, we had Ante booked and Alexis with a blow to the ankle we needed fresh people. Castillejo and Hauge have given us freshness.”
