Official: Cagliari vs. AC Milan starting XIs – two changes from win over Empoli

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has made two changes to his starting line-up for the game against Cagliari compared to the team that beat Empoli.

Pioli has gone with Mike Maignan in goal protected by a back four from right to left consisting of Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Theo Hernandez, meaning captain Alessio Romagnoli would start from the bench.

A double pivot of Ismael Bennacer and Franck Kessie has been chosen allowing Sandro Tonali to get some rest after he had a fever in midweek, though he can come off the bench, and that gives Brahim Diaz the chance to start as the playmaker.

Junior Messias has got the nod on the right wing over Alexis Saelemaekers, with Rafael Leao on the left wing and Olivier Giroud starting over Zlatan Ibrahimovic despite also battling a fever earlier in the week.

Official Milan XI (4-2-3-1): Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Kalulu, Theo Hernandez; Bennacer, Kessie; Messias, Diaz, Leao; Giroud.

Bench: Mirante, Tătăruşanu; Ballo-Touré, Florenzi, Gabbia, Romagnoli; Bakayoko, Krunić, Saelemaekers, Tonali; Ibrahimović, Rebić.

Official Cagliari XI (3-4-2-1): Cragno; Goldaniga, Lovato, Altar; Bellanova, Marin, Grassi, Lykogiannis, Dalbert; João Pedro, Pavoletti.

Bench: Aresti, Radunović; Carboni, Ceppitelli, Obert, Zappa; Deiola, Kourfalidis; Ceter, Keita, Pereiro.

  1. Can’t complain at the team and a few decent options on the bench. I can’t see the starting team blowing Cagliari away so that depth will be important whether in need of a goal or protecting a lead.

    1. we cannot even be thinking “protecting a lead” we have to attack until the final whistle, once we score we have to step on Caglari’s throat by scoring again giving them no hope. Only think defending when at least 2 goals up. Forza Rossoneri !!!!

      1. I agree with some reservations because there is no doubt that one of milans limits has often seem to be that we ease the foot of the speeder when ahead and when a match really should be closed but on the same time we cant completely play with our heads under our arms in our eagerness to score more goals either so in the end its also a balancing act.
