AC Milan defender Davide Calabria was snubbed by Roberto Mancini as Italy crashed out of their World Cup qualifying campaign with a semi-final loss against North Macedonia.
MilanNews writes how Mancini preferred to bring Mattia De Sciglio instead of Calabria after Di Lorenzo’s knee injury which was a positive for Milan as he was able to train at Milanello with Stefano Pioli, after a trip to London to take in some sights.
Calabria now has an extra charge, perhaps to show that Mancini was wrong to not call him up. What is even more bizarre is that Alessandro Florenzi is the back-up to the Primavera product, yet Florenzi was the one who started last night.
With Theo Hernandez on one side and Davide Calabria on the other, Pioli has settled on effective tactical solutions that have a nice equal mix of providing balance in both phases but also threat going forward. There is no Qatar to strive for, but the No.2 wants a Scudetto to show for this season.
Yesterday’s game showed how much Milan don’t need Barardi. He’ll feed off weaker teams but when the pressures on he’s frail. Milan need players who will take their chances when they matter most.
There is NO ONE who “feeds off weaker teams” ATM so we need a player like that (too).
While berardi missed chances especially that open net he was ever the only danger going forward. Only one who can beat his man and could shoot. Insigne and immobile should never wear the italy shirt again. Absolutely useless. How zaniolo, belotti, Calabria were snubbed is unforgivable
Yep. Berardi failed to score but was miles ahead of competition (even Immobile & Insigne combined).
Did Berardi receive good passes? Not that much. He created MOST of his chances by himself.

The usual criticism of Calabria is that he’s not good offensively, which I think is partially true, even Pioli hinted at that at some point.
Mancini wants someone who could push higher up and provide good crosses, so the choice went to another Milanista, Florenzi, who also happens to be a Euro 2020 champion.
Calabria continues to improve and I hope he will get a place in Mancini’s squad in the upcoming period.

Di Lorenzo got injured but Florenzi was already in the squad as a back up. So Mancini needed a back up for Florenzi technically…..and he still went with De Sciglio who doesnt even play for Juve. Unbelievable!!! Both De Sciglio and Florenzi are backups in their respective clubs. It is beyond me..
Apart from “that tackle” it’s not like Florenzi ventured forwards much in that game. So the better offense myth goes out the door
As some of you know, I am a milanista since +30 years back. I am not Italian so I don’t have the same passion for there national team for obvious reasons but its beyond me how they cannot perform better, let alone go through considering the promising youngster Italy has to its disposal. From Milan we have Tonali, Calabria, Pobega, the first one, I consider to be almost on level with Veratti besides from exp and mental composer. That being said its beyond understanding how a country with so many talents cannot go trough. Personally, I don’t think it has anything to do with Serie A but the lack of a good chef/coach.
As to Mancini…….he should have subbed earlier, at the 60 minute mark, we had a good team on the pitch, AND good players on the bench,just was not working, that is only critisism of him, players have to perform and they didn’t, plain and simple, BUT others need to be on the pitch to succeed or fail as well, Belotti was injured, but Pedro was available ,too little too late, Tonali was available , too little to late, as well. As to Calabria, not up to form as he was last year, but I would have had him out there as well. We needed to give N. Mace. a new look at 60′ as they had “our number” at that point, make them adjust to new players, at 60′ they realized they had us.
One thing I can’t understand is why kalulu is so much better suited to CB than Calabria, who’s style of play is more like cb than wingback.
