Mattia Caldara has reflected upon his time at AC Milan in a revealing interview, admitting he felt he could not repay the trust the club put in him.

After a very unlucky spell at Milan, Caldara moved back to Atalanta in January as the Rossoneri agreed to part ways with the defender.

In total, the only made two appearances for the club during the one and a half years he spent there. Of course, this is the result of his major injury struggles, having kept him on the sidelines for 44 games.

In addition to his injury struggles, Caldara also had some issues off the pitch that had an effect on Milan’s decision to sell him, as we exclusively revealed.

Caldara spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport about his time at San Siro, and appeared to express some regret as to how it want.

“For the first time in my life I was unable to repay the trust I had from a club, to express myself at my levels: it burns me a lot, it was a defeat,” he said (via MilanLive).

“I still think about it, but I know I have to put it aside: such a difficult year and a half has already been enough. And I will always say thanks to Milan. If it didn’t work, it was my fault.

“Today I feel behind others and if I want to recover I have to run faster than the others, until 2021. I hope to do everything possible to repay Atalanta’s trust and maybe even Mancini. I didn’t succeed once, with AC Milan, and it can be enough. “
