‘Not a high-scoring striker’ – Capello states Allegri hasn’t found a centre forward at Milan

AC Milan lack one player for most people, and that is a goalscoring striker. Goals, of course, have come from a few players this season, but not a striker.

Christian Pulisic has been deployed in a second striker-type role, and so you can, perhaps, make the argument that he is a goalscoring striker. However, he is not the mould of player that most imagine in this position.

Ultimately, he is not what Massimiliano Allegri requested in the summer. When he joined, the Italian asked for a goalscoring, physical striker. Pulisic, as much as he may be playing centrally, is a goalscorer, yes, but he is not Dusan Vlahovic (or someone of that ilk).

Capello’s review

Rafael Leao also is not really that Vlahovic-type player that Allegri sought in the summer, so there will likely be a hunt for someone like that in the upcoming mercatos. Especially with Fabio Capello telling Gazzetta dello Sport that the Rossoneri are the team that has not found a centre forward.

“In Serie A, however, there’s another team that still hasn’t found a centre forward, AC Milan, even though Gimenez is useful up front for the team’s movements, and Allegri has begun an adaptation effort with Leao.

“Rafael is proving to have the ability to free himself and find space, but he’s still not a high-scoring striker. There’s less abundance than the competition, but Pulisic can play anywhere, so much so that he seems perfect even in his current position in the 3-5-2: he can move, has quality and pace, and runs vertically.

“I have the impression that starting more centrally is better for him: he becomes much more dangerous if free to roam.

“At Juventus, it’s a different story because they might have a top scorer, Vlahovic, but Tudor keeps him on the bench and doesn’t play him. I don’t understand why, given that David and Openda aren’t performing as well and, in fact, aren’t performing as well as expected. Let’s give them some more time, but the Bianconeri had a reliable centre forward—Vlahovic—but perhaps he’s too confident, and that’s why he’s not playing.”

  1. Under Capello:

92/93 Papin and Van Basten scored 13
    93/94 Massaro scored 11
    94/95 Simone scored 17
    95/96 Weah scored 11
    97/98 Weah scored 10

(And it seems Milan changed strikers every season in the 90s as well….)

    I know….Serie A was harder back then….

It’s also worse now, so that is reflected in the strikers available.

But by all means let’s keep signing new strikers every single season.

    1. I am confused, are you trying to show that they scored a lot or not enough ?
In 3 of those seasons we were champions and in 2 of those seasons the named strikers have won a ballon d’or (Van Basten in 1992 and Weah in 1995).
And what’s the takeaway from all of this ?
Most of the players you named also played several seasons with us.

  3. Gimenez physique peaked my interest, he seemed huge on the field… I think Bebote is growing into his role well (off the ball movements aren’t bad nor assisting his teammates; he just needs to learn how after getting into a good position just kick the ball as hard as he can. when aim fails go for strength!)

  4. Bebote need to train 1st-time shoot & placing shoot, try being less latinas typical player, too much touch loising momentum.
even Super Pippo addicted to watcing goals video in lesser league just to sharp his instinct

  5. All of you supporting gimenez are just stupid fools, I don’t know what he needs to learn now, I thought he was a professional footballer, your love for the idiot will make you a loser, gimewis not a professional footballer, God punish all of you gimenez supporters you all are so dumb
