‘Then it ends badly’ – Capello issues warning to Milan ahead of Lazio trip after Inter’s draw

Fabio Capello has urged AC Milan not to be distracted by Inter dropping points, and to focus solely on winning against Lazio.

Milan make the trip to the capital to face Lazio tonight with an opportunity having presented itself. Inter’s 1-1 draw with Atalanta on Saturday means that the Rossoneri – with a win against the Biancocelesti – would have halved the gap at the top in one week.

However, it is easier said than done against a Maurizio Sarri side that will be fired up in front of a bumper home crowd, after weeks of playing in front of protests. Nonetheless, if the Scudetto door was slightly opened by the derby win, tonight it could be pushed even further ajar.

Capello was interviewed by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MN24) and he commented on the events of Saturday at San Siro, and what that might mean for how Milan approach tonight’s game.

“Inter’s draw with Atalanta may have brought cheer to Milanello, but the trip to Rome is definitely not to be taken lightly. And sometimes, when you’re fired up and want to do too much, you overdo it and then it ends badly,” he said.

“It certainly helps. Max is good at reading the moments and has a lot of experience. Plus, he’s always balanced in his comments. Even yesterday at the press conference, he rightly kept a low profile, continuing to harp on the Champions League and rarely touching on the Scudetto.

“If Milan were to drop to five points behind, it wouldn’t automatically mean the championship would be back on track. It’s always legitimate to dream and hope.

“But everything would still depend on Inter, who would have to make at least two or three more mistakes. And at the same time, Milan shouldn’t stop winning. Starting this evening in Rome.”
