CIES: How Milan’s €375m squad cost compares to every other club

AC Milan are nowhere close to Europe’s elite when it comes to the cost of assembling the squad currently at Paulo Fonseca’s disposal, a study has shown.

The 470th CIES Football Observatory Weekly Post has published the 100 teams around the world with the costliest squad in terms of the transfer fees combined, with Chelsea in first place at €1.28bn including add-ons and €1.15bn without them.

Manchester City and Manchester United complete the podium with both of them over €1bn, while PSG are at €772m and are the only non-Premier League team in the top seven. Arsenal (€798m) and Spurs (€787m) are above Liverpool (€735m). Real Madrid (€720m) and Juventus (€626m).

Al-Hilal (€485m, 13th) are first among non ‘top five’ league teams, ahead of three other Saudi Arabia’s clubs: Al-Nassr (€270m), Al-Ittihad (€226m) and Al-Ahli (€224m).

Where do Milan rank? The answer is 22nd place, at €375m in combined fees with bonuses and €332m without across 23 transfers at an average of €16.3m.

Below is the overall ranking:

The Serie A ranking:

1. Juventus €626m
2. Napoli €394m
3. Milan €375m
4. Inter €329m
5. Roma €261m
6. Atalanta €258m
7. Fiorentina €196m
8. Bologna €171m
9. Lazio €161m
10. Torino €132m

As MilanNews write, the bulk of the figure is made up by Rafael Leao’s €49.5m cost (when adding in the fine issue which was resolved with an extra €20m payment). The second most expensive player is far behind, namely Fikayo Tomori who cost €35m including the loan fee and permanent fee.

Closing the podium is Samu Chukwueze will cost €28m if all the bonus clauses are triggered. The rest – as we have written about before – is made up of a lot of €15-20m signings.

  1. Damn.
Juventus spent almost double on their squad compared to inter just so they can finish behind them for 4 years straight.
Many fans have issues with Milan only buying players around 20 m. If you check inter squad, outside of Barella(44m), Bastoni(31) and Pavard(30m) only Lautaro(25m) cost them more than 20m, the rest are 15m or less or free signings.
Their core players are improving their games year after year and are the true leaders of the team.
Milan core players are getting worse year after year and are more known for responding on Twitter and throwing hissy fits than what they do on the pitch or being leaders.

    1. that’s the important of Sporting Director,
then compare the 1st 2 years of M&M w/ current,
how much they spend & what players they’ve got.
