CM: De Ketelaere’s resurgence convincing Atalanta amid €23m option

By Oliver Fisher -

Charles De Ketelaere seems to be enjoying life as a new Atalanta player to the extent that a permanent move there already seems a distinct possibility.

Calciomercato.com recall that De Ketelaere appeared to struggle a lot in his first season at Milan following a €35m move from Club Brugge, often appearing isolated and disjointed on the field. Under Gian Piero Gasperini, things have been a lot different.

The playmaker has two goals and two assists to his name across Serie A and the Europa League, in eight total appearances, but in general it was quality performances that convinced the management and the Atalanta fans.

The young Belgian is fighting hard to prove to Atalanta that he is worth an investment, and at the moment the Bergamo club intend to keep him in the squad beyond his loan.

Their directors are increasingly convinced by the idea exercising the option to buy they have, set at €23m plus €4m in bonuses. La Dea firmly believe they will be able to get the most out of the 22-year-old.

Then, there are two options for the future: keep him to be one of the cornerstones of the team or sell him abroad at a higher price, achieving a significant capital gain.

  1. If they really want him and if they’re smart they’d negotiate a lower fee earlier on and it would then put it in our hands as to whether or not we take the loss or minimize the loss

    1. This doesn’t make sense. It’s clear that the number set is intended to prevent us from making a capital loss. In other words, this is already the best deal we’re willing to give them. it’s take it or leave it. We have no reason to accept a lower buy out earlier and take the capital loss. If he continues like this and they don’t exercise their buyout he will have a market in the summer.

    2. I don’t see why we should accept that. He will have suitors next summer if he continue played like these past few matches, so if Atalanta won’t activate the buyout we likely can get higher money than the €23m clause.

Buyout clause is usually lower than the amount of transfer fee required if a player sold directly.

  2. this could be our young future striker and good Giroud replacement if he would be played as a forward
sadly…Milan almost destroyed another talented player (like many before) by making bad decisions

wish him good luck and hope he will shine

    1. He is not a lone striker, AM, nor a winger. He can’t lead a line and his hold up play is unconvincing.

      He is a second striker.

He stagnated at Milan because someone here thought he will be able to play as Attacking Midfielder, which he can’t.

  3. I do not know where all of this puffery is coming from. I can understand Gasperini gets asked questions and he throws his full support behind CDK, what else can he do?

He also says he sees something. I do not believe any of us have seen what Gasperini thinks he sees yet.

CDK is not going to lead our line any time soon. He’s not doing it for Atalanta. Scamacca is the #9 when fit (and Zapata was at the start of the season).

I think too many look at this from the perspective of the disaster of his first season which, albeit more productive, would not have been any more worthy of a player starting for Milan this season had he scored 5 tap-ins (of the 10 he missed). The floor is so low that improvement is mistaken for quality.

It’s a weird thing. I would say CDK is almost position-less. He doesn’t look an AM, we all saw that. I don’t believe he has the feet or the speed for a wing. He is about as much a second striker as he was an AM.

I think Gasperini is on the path to turning him into a striker. I can’t really make sense of the Scamacca-CDK dynamic, otherwise. Atalanta would look much better with Lookman playing off Scamacca (but Lookman has pissed Gasperini off and Scamacca hasn’t really gotten fit yet).

If Atalanta want to pay EU25m for the right to turn CDK into a player let them. We can go and get someone who is actually suited to a role.

Having said all of that, I will continue to watch CDK with interest.

  4. Gasperini was already an admirer of his when Milan bought him. Now they got him on cut-price offer. It’s a win-win situation for both clubs if Atalanta decides to buy him out for that amount as Milan won’t register a loss.

  5. Resurgence is a bit of a stretch. He is still timid and disappears every now and then in matches, but the goals, assists, and regular playing time are slowly rebuilding his confidence. If he continues to improve, he would be welcome back at Milan . I think he started okay last season but the expectations were too high and he was not mentally ready to handle it.
