CM: Fonseca one step away from Milan – why he ticks boxes for the management

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will soon turn the page and begin a new era as Stefano Pioli will leave the club, with Paulo Fonseca now the big favourite to replace him.

Milan announced this morning that Pioli will leave the club at the end of the current season, following a tenure of nearly five years at the club which means that tomorrow’s game against Salernitana will be his last with the club.

As Calciomercato.com report, the man who is currently expected to come in and take on the role is Fonseca, who has been mentioned by various sources as a potential candidate for weeks now.

The management believe that the former Roma boss meets a series of requirements indicated by the board, led by Gerry Cardinale, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada.

He has experience, both in Italy and abroad, his style is of an attacking vocation, he is used to working with young players and has a certain appeal, presumably in terms of his charisma.

Fonseca is expected to sign a three-year contract in the next few days. We are at the final details, what remains to be established is whether it will be a two-year deal plus the option of a third or a three-year agreement with the ‘Zorro’.

  1. The only box he is ticking is the cancelation for next year streaming service.

Great job by this management to drive fans away.

This is not Milan the one we loved and supported, no ambition nor vision. This Milan is Jorge Mendez clowns Milan 🤡

      1. From all people you particularly should not talk if Noneseca got hired after lecturing people in other posts about media just throwing names of candidates and only the management knows how will be the manager.

        1. What does that have to do with what I said? 🙂

Don’t just reply for the sake of replying. Let it go, let it go……. 🙂

  2. We are at a crucial stage in this team’s development that we need to bring in a decorated coach and serial winner of a coach.

  3. If it’s him, well, it’s probably not the most exciting news, but what the heck, best of luck and let’s hope for good things to come. We have no idea how this will turn out, Fonseca could be just the right man for the job.
The only fans this will drive away are those who are never happy with anything, who moans and cries non-stop.

  4. Sérgio Conceição would have been a better choice. I’m a little disappointed but Fonseca is not the worse option.

If Milan management invest in the team and strengthen the key areas of the squad then we can compete with Fonseca.

Allegri, Capello, Sacchi, Ancelotti, Pioli, and Zaccheroni didn’t win anything prior to arriving at Milan and they weren’t the best option available at the time of their appointment.

So hopefully, Fonseca time at Milan will be successful especially if we have a good mercato.

  5. It’s really hard being a milan fan, it really is. Too bad I ca t help it. How does juve get it right? They find a promising target and wrap it up right away meanwhile were linked with every manager in the world and get the worst one.

    1. Juve has an owner that loves the club, he is a fan himself. We have owners who couldn’t care less for the club and are only here for profit.

      1. This is an answer to both @Rossi and @Milanellofm.
“how does Juve get it right?” Let me see…
They have more money and more importantly, they CHEAT. Which is why they were not in any European competition this year. And while you all are drooling over how great Juventus and their owner is remember we have a more recent Scudetto then they do and have finished ahead of them for the last 4 seasons. But somehow their ownership is getting it right and ours is terrible. Makes total sense.

    2. It actually isn’t that hard being a Milan fan. Just support the team no matter what. It is only hard for fairweather fans. Too many people have been spoiled by the surprising Scudetto win a few years back.

      1. So basicly be a spinless sheep. Got it. You might as well support Benevento or any other random team with those expectations lol.

        1. By your logic, you would just jump ship after a few poor seasons. Being upset when your team finishes 2nd is bizarre. Being disappointed, sure, but too many on here are angry with management, coaching, players, et al for being the 2nd best team. There is no club in the world that wins every single season, in any league, in any sport. Disappointing not to win but there could be far worse scenarios so why so angry?

          1. Some people are far more emotionally vested into this club than others. And that’s OK. Just becomes hard for them to be objective about things, you know?

            Different Folks, different strokes.

          2. But its not about being 2nd, and you know that. Its about being 20 points behind the winners. So you see it looks much different when you tell the full story. A top team that can’t win titles is normal to get the fans upset. Hiring coach who has proven that he can’t win titles is again normal to get them upset, cause they see in which direction the team is going.

          3. @ACM1899 feel free to explain your objectivity. Cause you constantly talk about it but never show it. If they hire a weak coach is normal that people will expect weak results. Thats by definition objective… but please show us this other objectivity that you know about.

        2. To your reply below:

I can’t show you objectivity if you don’t understand it. My takes may not be your cup of tea. So just move on to like-minded comments.

          1. Well that sums up your comments in general, just trying to bash other comments. I explained to you very simple what objective is. Maybe you are the one who doesn’t understand it if you can’t even define it, have you thought of that ? Speaking of just bashing comments, as someone else above has told you, your takes have been wrong on many things, so there is pleanty of material to bash you on if you like that kind of stuff. And the fact that you get things wrong so often maybe should make you question about how really objective your objectivity is lol. Any way not all of us are here to act smart towards others and we just want to comment about football. So i will leave you with that.

        3. I don’t understand what you’re trying to prove here…

I never bashed you. I’m not picking a fight with you. I even encouraged you to move on from my comments since they aren’t your cup of tea. 🙂

You come back with “you can’t even explain objectivity”. You’re right, maybe we fundamentally see objectivity differently.

          To you objectivity seems:
“ Hiring coach who has proven that he can’t win titles is again normal to get them upset, cause they see in which direction the team is going”. You have clearly been proven wrong by Pioli’s appointment and the Scudetto he has won at Milan.

OBJECTIVELY, Pioli has been a success at Milan.

To me, objectivity is judging a coach based on merit/results. I may not agree if its a coach that I approve of or like, but I will still wait to see how he fares on the bench.

Not sure why you’re trying to come after me 🙂 Have I been critical of others’ comments? ABSOLUTELY, if they merit it. Have I ever claimed to know everything? Never.

Te bigger question is why are you trying so hard to be proven right against my takes? 🙂 I’m flattered. I just don’t understand it.

          1. There is no such thing as my objectivity or yours. Either is objective or not. I gave you an example of something that is observed without emotions, which is objective. You are the one calling people on it like they are not objective. You also came in this thread after my comments not me lol. And i see you are on all my comments in other threads. If anyone should be less emotionl here and more objective that is you mate. Keep it civilized and comment on football same as the rest of us.

      2. The Banter Era was so painful. Painful enough that within the first few weeks of the season I stopped watching.

I have always supported the team but I’d rather not watch when we’re not competing at a high level.

        1. The Banter Era teams were not able to qualify for the Champions League. Do you think bringing in Fonseca will result in the same? I can see in a worse case scenario a drop down to 4th/5th spot in the table but unless the team is stripped of its top players without adequate replacements, I can’t imagine we would be far worse than this season’s performance.

  6. Although if he does come, I wish him all the best. I support anybody who comes and hope he can shake things up but im just not optimistic or anything. Would have felt much more excited had we hired a top level coach but can never rule out anyone, just need the right environment to flourish.

  7. He is not a bad coach, far from it. Play attacking football, but his defense is solid, Lille conceded only 24 goals this season, same as Leverkusen.

That being said, he is not a name that excites fans, and the spell he had in Roma is not helping his case.

With all that it mind, it seems he was picked not because of his experience or style of play, but because he is not a coach that will work with players he is given and not complain too much.

I will support any coach management brings, until they show me they no longer deserve my support, but I am definitely not moved by him.

    1. *but because he is a coach that will work with players he is given and not complain too much.

One “not” sneaked in there and ruined the entire sentnce

    2. I’m not sure where did you get these numbers from, but Lille conceded 34 goals this season, where Leverkusen indeed 24. This is a significant difference.

Not to mention that Fonseca finished 4th and failed to qualify for Champions League because he lost 3rd position to Brest, which is a club with 2.5 times (!) lower market value than his Lille has.

Translating that to Italian reality, it would be like losing Champions League spot with Milan against club like Torino.

      1. I was trying to help the brother out. But it was kinda obvious that it was not correct.

As for Brest, they were Girona of League 1, it’s unfair to underestimate them.

      2. Brest was exceptional in that regard, it’s like Udinese qualifying for the Champions League. The market value of Lille’s players is 5th in France, so finishing 4th is not bad. Atalanta is probably the closest example in terms of league results this season.

        1. Oh yeah, we can’t blame him because a nicely organized small team surpassed him… so I guess it would be fine to see Bologna/Atalanta/Torino/Fiorentina suprass his Milan next year, right guys?

          1. Of course I don’t like it. I don’t mind if Gasperini, Simeone or Tuchel become the new Milan coach, but that doesn’t mean I’m fine with Milan being surpassed by a small team.

    3. Agree with this but him being a “yes man” is being thrown around a tad too much imo. I’d rather someone who fits in with the manager’s vision than someone who’s going to blow the place up, like Conte. That said, I would’ve preferred Motta or Conceição but let’s see what happens.

    4. “I will support any coach management brings, until they show me they no longer deserve my support, but I am definitely not moved by him.”

Exactly right, as we all should. Criticizing a manager who has not even signed a contract seems ludicrous. Let them earn your disapproval before passing judgement.

  8. Same hysterical overreaction when we hired Pioli or almost hired Lopetegui. We’d all love Guardiola but that ain’t gonna happen so we’re stuck with managers of this level. It is what it is.

    1. And yet histerical reaction was right. Pioli had one great season (with help of Zlatan’s mentality) and then with nice squad achieved nothing.

Last year if it wouldn’t be for Juventus fine Milan wouldn’t even qualify for the Champions League (from game Pioli’s Milan finished at 5 position), ridiculous lose to Torino at the first match of Coppa Italia.

This year despite having really nice squad lost Scudetto in January, defeated in Coppa Italia, failed to get out of the Champions League group just to be beaten by rookie De Rossi and his Roma.

I’m not here to just blame Pioli (happy that once he won Scudetto), but who know where Milan would be now if that day they would actually decide to hire more promising coach than Pioli who has won nothing before in his life. Once average, always average. And here we have same story once again, now with Fonseca, so foreign Pioli lookalike – “yes-man” who does not have any objections to selling players, but as well no ambitions.

      1. You are not calculating the intangibles though. And that’s the development that the core players have undergone under Pioli. That’s a factor too. He took us out of the banter era and into relevance. Sure he was tactically limited but he achieved something beyond his limits – that’s a Scudetto. So yea, in my books his run was successful.

        1. Pioli took 3 years to develop Leao and Kvara was developed in a matter of days by Spalletti. Lets just not say Player development is a strength of Pioli under ANY circumstances. He is a good man manager. That’s just it.

          1. Your example does not mean Pioli is not a good player developer. He developed more than just Leao. And even if the Georgian developed quicker, that doesn’t take away from what Pioli has been able to accomplish with the players here…

      2. Look at the 4 years before Pioli was hired. Then look at the last 4 years under Pioli. I would say that was a very good hire.

        1. Please do not employ fonseca Italy is a different ball game to France this was proved at Roma it will end up the same as pioli we will not win anything get conti in to get the place going. .

        2. He was Not even remotely a good hire. ZLATAN was a good hire. We won because of Zlatan. If Zlatan wasnt here, Pioli wouldnt reach anywhere near 500 ft of Scudetto in next 50 years.

          1. Your point lacks any tangible foundation to build on. Pure speculation and there’s no way for you to back it up.

Is it reasonable to say Maldini had an impact?

Isn’t reasonable to say Pioli had an impact?

Did Zlatan coach every game, develop every player and make every tactical decision?

This is what I mean when I say a lot of people hear like complete objectivity. You’re just huffing and puffing because the coaching hires seem to run opposite to whatever parameters you have.

    2. Yes, it’s so ridiculous the people on here. Really they just hate the ownership (because they are American) and will bad mouth any player or coach that they sign. Just as they trashed every signing Milan made last summer and it ended up being one of the best mercados in recent memory with almost all of the players contributing. It doesn’t make a difference to them , they want to hate. If the new coach does well they will all pretend that they didn’t trash the hiring, and if the new coach doesn’t do as well as Pioli they will all pretend that they weren’t screaming to push Pioli out the door.

        1. Why the hell do you two care? Are people commenting you or the way management are handling the club? All I see are folks who are not satisified with management but no one bashes your opinion or insult you. And all you’re commenting on this blog is people’s opinion and bash and insult them. U don’t like it? Move on. Besides, take a look at other social platforms and opinions there. It’s not like people whine here only. People are showing their dissatisfaction everywhere on web.

          1. The best part is that they even have to take other people opinions out of context as well in order to bash them. For example no one asked for Guardiola, people were asking for Motta, De Zerbi, which was reasonable and within the posibilities of this club. I really don’t get this people either. Constantly just complaning about other people opinions. They are basicly just looking for something to argue about and if there is nothing they will make it up lol. They hardly even comment about football at all. Seems like they are commenting more out of some personal bitterness rather then anything else.

          2. They clearly work for the new management😂😂😂. They see no wrong in anything they’ve done. Never a middle ground

      1. @K I’m not sure who are you referring to, but I never “bad mouthed” any single player bought last year, I actually think it was great mercato, which I kind of already said by mentioning that Pioli had a great team this year.

I don’t know about you, but I am a Milan fan. This Milan that has won several times Champions League, has won Scudetto many time, had for a long time top-players and top-coaches. I would like to see at some point this Milan back, and that’s why I’m not excited at all at hiring Fonseca, who is just an average coach – did not achieve anything. If you are happy with hiring him, then ok (but I would be really curious to see any real argument from your side that actually backs up him, because I honestly can’t find any).

And obviously anyone here knows that no Klopp, Guardiola or Ancelotti would come here, simply because they would demand top players which Milan at this moment is not able to afford. But if they don’t have buget, there were more promising unexperienced coaches on the market that could do a difference – like mentioned here dozen times: Motta, De Zerbi, even coaches from outside top5 leagues such as Slot from Feyenoord (who later landed in Liverpool) or Bosz from PSV who did a great season. Instead, they went for guy that NEVER won anything serious in 17 years of coaching. You are seriously happy with that as ACM fan? Because I might be happy with that if I’d be a Fiorentina fan (without disrespecting them, once great club), not Milan. Cheers…

        1. You could have and probably did say the same thing when they hired Pioli, and he led us to our first Scudetto in 10 years. And for you to claim to know the ambition of this ownership or this coach is the height of arrogance and ignorance. I trust the people in charge at Milan much more than the judgement of the people on here.
As far as the ownership, they have had one summer mercado so far and it was an excellent one and the team went from 4th place to second so the completely irrational anger towards them must really be about something else. (The evil American owners that got rid of the infallible Maldini.)
I’m not going to trash this coach before he is even given a chance. I would have preferred Motta, but why not wait and see how it works out before spewing all the hatred out?

          Last 4 seasons under Pioli:
          2nd place
          Scudetto
4th place ( Champions League semi finals)
          2nd place
And he never once had the best squad in the league.
If this guy is another Pioli, we could do much worse.

          1. @K I’m still waiting for your arguments for positives of signing Fonseca, because so far I didn’t hear any…

I think Pioli is actually a great example of “proven average, always average” coach. He had onnce-in-a-lifetime season (with mental support of Zlatan that every player confimed) when he won Scudetto, and what came later? 5th place in Serie A (he was 4 only because Juve got minus points, if not that we would even fail to qualify for CL group stage). Not to mention embarassing loses in Coppa Italia and fail to surpass Roma this year in Europa League. Consider also the squad that he currently has – in this case I agree with you, Milan actually has a really nice squad now – and Pioli’s results are for me underachievements, meaning he should do more with that team. I’m not going to even mention losing Derby in a row…

But also… in the past 15 year how many coaches that never won anything before has actually won something in Milan? I’ll tell you, it happened only once, with Pioli. Do you want to wait another 15 years to happen that as well with guys like Fonseca? If yes then maybe you should be a fan of Torino, not great AC Milan.

          2. @Honest Guy I’m not making any arguments for him positive or negative. I trust the people in charge as I think they have done a good job so far with the signings they have made.
I will wait to see how the team actually performs before making a judgement. IMAGINE THAT…

      2. Perfect analyst, being a fan with this same set of people can’t be more annoying. They are like a fly that will follow the corpes to the grave while buzzing nd humming.

      3. 💯 Lack of objectivity. Not all, but a vast majority.

Same with Fonseca. He’s not my first choice by a mile. But if he does get appointed I’ll give him a chance. If he’s successful I’ll laud him. If he bombs it, I’ll criticize him and management for appointing him.

But it will be based on merit.

  9. “Has experience in Italy” meaning he failed at Roma, really great experience…

Extremally dissapointed with that coach, fully agree with Milanellofm comment above, Milan was linked with dozens of coaches and this one really is the worst one, because he gives absolutely no hope. Fonseca has been a coach for 17 (!) years and achieved NOTHING valuable. How they can expect him to bring anything worthwhile to the table of such a big club like AC Milan?

Especially as with the current situation (finished 2nd in Serie A, last year Champions League semi-final) the only reasonable expectation for Milan is to fight for Scudetto. Do you really see a guy like Fonseca getting a Scudetto?

Really… if they didn’t have enough money for an experienced top-flight coach, then they had options to sing a young promising coach that can explode with talent like Xabi Alonso did – De Zerbi, Motta were available, and more. For example Ajax just signed Farioli (Italian btw), who finished season alongside Fonseca in Ligue 1 with OSG Nice (4 vs 5 position) being only 35-years old (!). This also shows how valuable Fonseca’s “experience” is, when a 35-yrs old folk just goes alongside him into Ligue 1 and achieves the same results.

It’s just sad, really sad to see such club as Milan once was becoming a medium-class one…

  10. Maybe if from the beginning the management sticks with their choice on Lopetegui (or be it Fonseca), it won’t be such big of a deal. The thing is they suddenly changed their mind on Lopetegui after the so-called protest from the fans. Of course we expected bigger name than the initial prospect after that fiasco. It’s all about managing the expectation. So after all it’s not the voice of the people that they consider. That’s the twist and prank of it all.

That’s what made most of the fans frustrated. It’s not like that we always hire experienced and decorated coaches to begin with.

    1. Because he’s crazy. He isn’t a project manager either. He only wants to buy expensive players and if they aren’t good enough he will fight his way out.

  11. The only positive thing i can think from Fonseca is most fans will have low expectation from him, so he might surprise us with over achievement like pioli did

  12. Bologna has announced that Thigao Motta won’t renew his contract with the club. Juve have offered him a 3 year contract worth 4mil per year.

  13. You all people whinning about everything, let the man give his best for the club (if he is coming or anybody else) without you all have low expections before he even started his first training… i bet even if we hire Conte, Xavi or aby other high profile coach, after the first loss you all start complaining about everything and why he is not fit for this club. Just wait and see.

    1. Most of people who are “whining” have some arguments that back up the statement that hiring him for a club like AC Milan is a bad choice.

What are your arguments then for hiring him, rather than just badmouthing everyone’s else opinions? Because he is available? So are dozens of coaches from Serie B based on that logic.

  14. NEGATIVE: There are better options available.

POSITIVE: We’ve seen the likes of Montella, Seedorf and Inzaghi coach this club. We have seen worse.

Guess we’ll have to judge him based on merit.

    1. You know it’s kind of your fault I’m this upset about it because your theory on Conte had me believing lol. But in all honesty I’ll support whoever’s appointed and take it from there.

  15. I guess we just needed someone to say “yes sir” since we paying Zoro 4.5 millions a year. I’m surprised Rudy Garcia wasn’t interviewed as well – maybe not much of a yes boss man

  16. I’m not against Fonseca he plays beautiful football he is much better than pioli he is more like Mota of bologna in defensively and anceloti what it offensive he is not that bad but he needs different rb and lb

  17. Hoping he’s at least as good as Pioli. Underwhelming choice doesn’t begin to cut it for a team that is finally resurging after 10+ years of obscurity.

  18. I fail to see the guarantees that Motta or De Zerbi would allegedly offer over Fonseca. Motta had one good season. Could be the start of an amazing career or could be a fluke. Could be his best season ever. De Zerbi won with Shakhtar and exceeded expectations with Sassuolo but was just sacked by Brighton.

    1. Well, a mid-table team like Bologna finishing 3rd in Serie A after a full season of almost 40 games was certainly not just luck.

Moreover, as a player Motta was part of Barcelona, Atletico, PSG, Inter and Italy National team. Learned from Louis van Gaal, Mourinho, Prandelli, Rijkaard and more. Top of the top, hard to beat that.

  19. Any chance Milan are biding time with Fonseca until a better option becomes available?

I just can’t wrap my mind around Fonseca. He doesn’t seem better than Pioli and Milan are clearly moving on from Pioli to improve.

I wonder if Milan simply can’t have the coach they really want at this time due to some issue…. Fonseca being used as a temporary solution?

    1. I’ve had many thoughts in my head but truth is we’re getting fonseca for who knows what reason. Is it cause we’re cheap? That he won’t state an opinion if a big player is sold? But I believe that it’s already done, fonseca is definitely the next coach.

All these coaches available this year and there’s surely many out there that can be a better fit but I don’t know what they see that we can’t. Why haven’t the ultras gone crazy like they did or lopetegui? It doesn’t make sense to me
