CM: Gabbia will return to Milan in January – agreement reached with Villarreal

By Oliver Fisher -

Some aid for AC Milan’s defensive crisis will arrive imminently as the return of Matteo Gabbia from his loan spell at Villarreal will take place, a report claims.

According to Calciomercato.com, Gabbia was immediately the first option to stem the wave of injuries that plagued the rearguard after Pierre Kalulu, Malick Thiaw and now also Fikayo Tomori suffered long-term injuries.

Gabbia will return to Milanello in January, ending his loan at Villarreal six months early, and he will be available to Stefano Pioli from the early stages of 2024. Given he does not need an acclimatisation period, he will be available as soon as it is possible to deposit the documents.

The winter transfer window opens on January 2nd, the same day as Milan-Cagliari in the Coppa Italia, while the away match to Empoli is scheduled for January 7th so it is perhaps more realistic to have him available for that.

Gabbia had immediately indicated his willingness to return, but Villarreal’s approval was missing, but that arrived in recent hours after contacts with Milan. The Rossoneri have secured the first addition for the defense and can now work on a second move to further strengthen the department in the winter window.

There are various options being evaluated, from Jakub Kiwior and Clement Lenglet to Thilo Kehrer and Nordi Mukiele.

  1. this is all we need, Gabbia has never let us down and we have Simic and Bartesaghi as well, so no need for some random import. if they insist on signing another then at least look at the italian market, plenty to choose from, enough with the cheap imports, better to wait for the summer and go all out for Scalvini

      1. Ok only two games? Nice, I’ll take that 😂

Lol you chose the Sassuolo game where pretty much most of the players played badly (or we were unlucky). Haha
If I recall if say he was kinda responsible for one of them sure. But Trasharusanu was terrible that game as was Calabria who gave up a pen.
