Luka Jovic of ACF Fiorentina

CM: Jovic arrives with a desire for redemption aiming for one year to become several

It is not quite at the stage of being last chance saloon for Luka Jovic, but he arrives at AC Milan fortunate to have such an opportunity and with a point to prove.

Calciomercato.com write how Jovic is hoping that the move to Milan the turning point to erase four long and very difficult years. It is an opportunity that arrived at the last minute, on the last day of the transfer window, when the Rossoneri decided to turn to him after failing with other pursuits.

Jovic was seen outside Casa Milan with tense, unsmiling expression after smiling, a tension that hides the great desire for redemption and Stefano Pioli wants to start from this desire.

The 25-year-old has the hunger and the desire to start again after years of ups and downs are two details that sounds familiar to two other arrivals in Milan, those of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic, who have already put in good performances.

Unlike them, Jovic knows he doesn’t have a guaranteed starting place because of Olivier Giroud but he will still get playing time because Milan are in the Champions League and at points this season will play every three days.

This is an aspect that Pioli himself did not fail to underline after the victory over Roma as he spoke on the arrival of Jovic and what it means for the squad.

“Jovic was part of the list of attackers we were looking for. He comes from a somewhat difficult season, he is a player of quality and talent. Players like this and with the right motivation they can always be useful so I’m sure he will give us a hand,” he said.

“We have signed another centre-forward because we will play many games and we want to be ambitious. Last year we had Giroud, Ibra, Origi and Rebic. This year we have one less so we think we are covered in all roles.

“Upon returning from the break, when we have 7 matches in 21 days, there will be room for everyone, to keep the performance high you don’t always have to play all the matches every three days.”

Milan signed Jovic from Fiorentina on a permanent basis, without paying La Viola any compensation or guaranteeing a percentage on any future resale. He signed a contract with the Rossoneri until the end of the season (30 June 2024), but it could be extended further.

A long-term future at Milan is therefore possible as there is a multi-year extension that the club have an option for, which would keep his €2.5m net salary.

The Diavolo signed him as deputy to Giroud but the Serbian may not just be passing through, because his aim is to get Pioli to focus on him in the short term and beyond.

  1. The Serbian Radamel Falcao.
He’s got everything a striker needs to be a top player. Even though he is on the shorter side, he is very good in the air.
His attitude is the only issue.
Milan should hire Zlatan as an attitude adjustment coach, even if its only on part time basis.

    1. Agreed, most probably that’s the case, but let’s hope not….
A risk taken -one can appreciate the reasons of failing Taremi’s negotiations, if they stand true- but it is a fact that Jovic never performed over the last few years no matter where he played.
Frankly I don’t buy any stories that he wants to redeem himself; to my eyes he simply isn’t good or determined enough to work hard and succeed.
Can he score 5+ goals? Yes, and he may well do so
Can he perform at such level to convince ACM and stay longer than this year? Highly unlikely.
This is a great opportunity for him, let’s see if he can meet the demands of such prolific club and role

      1. It indeed is a great opportunity for him and unless he gives his all regardless if he is a substitute player who will propably not play consistently he might not get as good a chance again so i for one expect him to give his utmost, Pretty sure he is aware of that as well himself so i at least hope and believe this could actually turn around his career and come good but time will tell.

  2. Obviously nobody has a clue.

The transfer market is largely like gambling. Some transfers will be a roaring success, the majority will likely end in failure (as in the player will not produce the same or better form at their new club and will eventually be moved on earning their agent more commission).

But his signing follows the classic transfer market logic of:

“This player who we already have who didn’t do particularly well (Orgii or CDK) or this youth player (Colombo) cannot be trusted but this new player who also didn’t do terribly well (Jovic) is now the answer”.

A large chunk of transfers tend to be players who were written off by another club but there’s this eternal belief that they’ll suddenly be transformed in a new environment.

Meanwhile any primavera player who is deemed good enough to be promoted (as in they’re the best of the best of their age group) will be rewarded with a series of loans (usually on TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY so that they don’t get a full preseason).

The joys of the modern transfer market.

  3. If he’s smart he will realize this is probably his last chance to resurrect his failing career or else his next move will be playing in the Serbian B division…

We shall see. I’m not holding my breath. Yes absolutely low-risk from a financial standpoint – but was hoping we would have signed someone more reliable considering the importance of the position in our system and Giroud’s age and overall work load. Huge risk to take by management with UCL knock out stages at stake to rely on such a risky character…let’s hope he proves everyone wrong and becomes a revelation this season and fast

  4. If Jovic doesn’t want to spend the rest of his career in MLS, Saudi league, Japan or something, he better get himself right.

He has the tools, but if his attitude slips, after a year he’s gone.

        1. Colombo presumably wanted to be loaned out because it’s pretty obvious he has no future at the club…..

Had we actually backed him he might have had more belief. Instead we did the worst possible thing. Strung him out all summer and loaned him on TRANSFER DEADLINE DAY so he didn’t get a full pre-season with his new club. If he’s really lucky he’ll get his loan cancelled in January and then he can move onto the next bar job….I mean professional football club for elite athletes perform at the highest levels imaginable where a split second is the difference between success and failure….
