CM: Leao in doubt for Roma clash with muscle issue; fears over Bonaventura

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan striker Rafael Leao is in doubt for next weekend’s trip to the capital to face Roma, according to a report.

The Rossoneri dropped two points in Stefano Pioli’s first game in charge at San Siro on Sunday night, drawing 2-2 with Lecce.

Hakan Calhanoglu and Krzysztof Piatek each gave Milan the lead, but Khouma Babacar and Marco Calderoni hit back for the visitors, the latter scoring a 92nd minute thunderbolt to make it 2-2.

Milan had multiple chances to kill the game, and among those who could be held responsible was Leao as the Portugal U21 international missed a number of chances that his team-mates provided.

He twice hit the side netting from good positions inside the area, chances he must start taking if he is to keep Piatek out of the side.

After the game, Pioli was asked why he chose to sub Leao off in place of Piatek, revealing that the Portuguese starlet sustained a muscle problem.

“I replaced Leao because the medic told me he had a slight muscular issue and we didn’t want to risk any further damage, while Paqueta also seemed tired.”

According to a report from Calciomercato.com, Leao is ‘in doubt’ for the game against Roma, and the medical tests he undergoes on Monday will be crucial for examining the extent of the injury.

The same outlet – who cite Tuttosport – claim that Giacomo Bonaventura is set to have an MRI scan after he suffered a muscle injury which kept him out of the squad against Lecce.

The staff are hoping it is simply muscle fatigue and not a tear.
