In order to secure the renewal of Leao last season, Milan needed to fix the issue of Leao and Lille owing Sporting CP €20m after he terminated his deal with the club in 2018.
Milan had refused to contribute to this fine, but it needed sorting to secure Leao’s renewal, as Leao was making monthly salary contributions to the fine.
After negotiations between Lille and Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani, a deal was struck which saw Milan pay Lille €20m, which was used to pay off the fine, but Lille would have to let go of the sell-on clause which as agreed when Milan bought Leao from the French club.
Therefore, should Milan sell Leao in the future, they will keep all of the profit rather than give some to Lille.
