CM: Milan snubbed €2m Caicedo deal – now €110m Chelsea or Liverpool move beckons

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan had the chance to sign Moises Caicedo three years ago in what would have been a bargain deal, and now he is heading for a nine-figure move.

Caicedo is currently at the centre of a transfer saga involving Chelsea and Liverpool. As per Sky, he has rejected the chance to join the Reds and wants to move to the London club, despite Liverpool agreeing a €120m deal with Brighton.

Brighton set a deadline of midnight on Thursday for bids to arrive and they accepted Liverpool’s offer as it was higher, but when Caicedo was expected to travel to Liverpool for a medical on Friday, he told the Seagulls he wants to honour his word to Chelsea.

“The fee with the club is agreed,” confirmed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp on Friday. “We will see what that means. We aren’t a club with endless resources and we didn’t expect a couple of things to happen this summer. Then it happened.”

Brighton signed Caicedo for £4.5m (around €5.2m) from Independiente del Valle in 2021, but he could have actually been a Milan player.

According to Daniele Longo, it was back in 2020 that Milan could have signed Caicedo for €2m when the scouting department – led by Geoffrey Moncada – recommended him to Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara.

The two directors didn’t feel like making that investment at the time and now he will leave Brighton for a figure believed to be around €110m.

  1. Stop blaming Maldini for not identifying good midfielders and good strikers! Seems many had forgotten he was a defender by trade! That’s why all the talents he identified in the defensive department were all shrewd( Theo as a left back, himself , Thiaw and Tomori) and maignan anything apart from these once we’re total failures! How could a defender knows what it means to be a midfield or striker? Giroud was a gamble that paid off for him and leao and tonali zeal! So pls dont mention Maldini for all the missed target! He will always be a great defender not a midfielder or stiker

      1. Didn’t Maldini also bring in Giroud and Leao. Didn’t he bring also Tonali, Bennacer and Krunic.
None of them is a striker but they all have played a great part in our accomplishments so far

These articles are hit pieces on Maldini while trying to sell the new management as head and shoulders above it. Anybody that has worked in large corporations knows that this is classic MBA behavior. I don’t see any discussions about failed players that they suggested… e.g. did Moncada suggest Emil Roback or Lazetic?

Let’s wait some time and let the work do the talking. Maldini and Massara got us a league and a CL semifinal, I hope the new management does a lot better, for the sake of Milan.

        1. So when we get the scudetto and reach CL semis its because Maldini and Massara but when we failed and lose its because Pioli?

      2. Another stupid baseless comment lol. Are you that biased that you forgot ummmm….I don’t know?? Perhaps Leao?? Hahahahaha. Idiot

    1. If he’s not an expert, maybe he should have listened to others that were? Kolo Muani is another one that’s now worth 80 million. Stop making excuses. It’s not the time.

    2. I just read similar thing about Man Utd missed on signing Caicedo for 6 millions few seasons ago due to multiple intermediaries involved. The article claimed that Caicedo was pushing to join Man Utd at that time.

    3. every director has hits and misses we’re not gonna sign every decent young player with potential. We also got leao, theo, tonali, maignan.tomori, kalulu for cheap fees and now they are worth a lot more. On the other hand we missed out on kolo muani,Fernandez, and caicedo

    1. Exactly, just like how Moncada had a big role in signing CDK including helping the negotiaton (as revealed by the agent). The rest is history.

Oh, where is Hauge whom Moncada bragged about? FYI, he talked publicly about how his scouting data lead Milan to buy Hauge.

  2. Falls right on Maldini’s lap. Nice one. Kolo Muani is another one. Now valued at 80 million. Awesome job. But hey we got Origi! Superb work Maldini!

Anyone who defends prior management… smh.

        1. And if we were to sell Leao, Mike and Theo? Three Maldini signings? We’d make what…..250m? Would your subjective propagated nonsense blurt about that too?

        2. Jeez you really are a broken record..I can read you like a book…a not a very good book…certainly not Bravo Two Zero by Andy McNab

You see you’ve made me resort to Alan Partridge now…

    1. Ya what about Szlobozlai, W Fofana, Botman and M Koné who M&M wanted to sign but ownership said no. Can’t have it both ways. Always hits and misses for EVERY director in the world. We can all cherry pick to support our own narrative but facts are facts. Move on everyone

  3. Realistically we never know how these players would develop in different environments, for me the biggest miss was missing kolo Muani on a free over Origi

    1. But of course what do I know? According to @A my opinion is invalid and anything I say in defense to him being disrespectful to me will be held against me

      1. Apologies to @A I get we both met eachother at the wrong time and communicated not in a very nice way, hope there’s no hard feelings as I got a bit upset

    2. Yeah I’d agree on that. I’m no clairvoyant but I said last summer Origi would be woeful when some were saying he’d score 20…he just isn’t a goal scorer, nobody seemed to realise he scores late on important games for a reason….he’s strong, he’s quick, he’s a handful…players are tired mentally and physically. Klopp felt it right to sign Jota, Nunez and even play Mane as a no9 than trust Origi.

  4. I mean the kid’s not worth that much – Bellingham went to RM for £86mill (bargain), ffs. English transfer market is ridiculous..
btw didn’t Moncada scout Enzo too (a 100Mill flop at Chelsea so far)

  5. @LT are you serious? Maybe you ain’t know football at all Enzo flop at Chelsea is the dumbest comment ever… you have to stop watching football again it making your brain sick

  6. Well I don’t blame him totally though cos sometimes the lack of budget and small budgetary allocation by the ownership contributed too and the penalties to balance the account…. So sometimes he try to manage what is available to coup what can be added to the team….. Though he had his flaws of sometimes wanting to ignore the scouting department to act on his own ideas with conviction from Massara his right hand Man rather than listen to Moncada who has been excellent in scouting great talents…. Kalulu, Leao, Thiaw, were his discoveries….. Now that he’s on board let’s reap from his skills that’s if Pioli will give him the chance and on board his talents discoveries, cos it takes the Coach too to onboard the talents of the youngsters and make them valuable markets… And if Furlani will also release funds when such talents are discovered and should be purchased.

  7. Would have been valued at 40m this summer as a Milan player. The prems just different. Would have been good fallback for Kessie that way we might have got sale money out of him

  8. Just because is gonna be a big transfer now does not mean if we had sign him 3 years ago that he would be the same lvl of player he is now.
Like we could have sign him 3 years ago and now be a complete flop that no one would remenber!People seem to forget that any player with the exception of some freaks of nature any other one can be completely different player from what they are in there current team heck even now theres no guarantee that he goes to Liverpool and performes like in Brighton he can take until next year to play like he has until now or we can be a complete flop and be just one more of the many 100+ flop players like Coutinho,Hazard,Dembele and many others!

  9. Lol some people expect us to sign every single young talent in existense and expect them all to be worth 100 mil. Do you guys know how many players scouts look at? Of course they would have looked at big priced players at one point. Hindsight is 20/20.

    1. Not to mention the fact that milan isn’t in the business of simply buying talent to raise they’re worth and sell-off which were all happy for cuz were looking to win trophies and be a top club. Some of those players wouldn’t be 100mil players cuz they wouldn’t have gotten the time to display what they’ve got with limited minutes

  10. We need to separate things.
Maldini was the best defender, awesome footballer and maybe great personality.
But that doesn’t mean he is also a great director, great scout.
He made some good decisions, and some bad decisions,it’s normal
But did i satisfied with his performance as a director and the way he dealt the transfer?
I think he was not really succeeded in this role

  11. orevious sempremian article “Fifa agent reveals milan walked away from kolo muani as massara preffered to bet on origi”

      1. Hey ink long time no see hope you are doing well, yeah i guess you are right and that it wont matter but at least now the info is out there 😀

        1. I have been just checking the news time to time, and not posting anything.
The distasteful takeover of trolls in the comment spaces is sad to be honest.
I miss the other space we had.

Also, for the sake of info sharing https://sempremilan.com/journalist-claims-milan-have-joined-ajax-and-man-utd-in-race-for-ecuador-sensation

So by idiot-logic, directors of Ajax, United, West Ham, Alaves, whoever else who knows, are also an utter failure. And of course, according to idiot-logic, Maldini made all decisions solo (only when it can be linked with something bad), and it was a collaboration (only when it can be linked with something good).

        2. Lol SM keeps censoring whenever I paste a past link from SM-itself it seems.
It listed how many teams were “claimed” to have been after Caicedo (none on the list was Brighton) – who according to idiot-logic all probably have failures as their directors.

I’d doing well mate, thanks. Hope you are as well!

          1. Sorry! It’s not intentional. Our comments filter is set up to block swear words and links from outside (for spam reasons) and yet it seems to be counting our own site links as spam.

          2. Thanks Oli for clearing that up. May I suggest a decorum notice or something similar for the comment spaces?
Because, – and you must have noticed this – the distasteful comments have been quite repugnant, and I am sure I am not the only one who has stopped/refrained from commenting.
            Take care.

          3. Yeah its been down spiralling lately, i pretty much moved over here from rossoneri blog because it had hit a low point while they also released very few articles but at this point its not like its much better here anylonger id argue its become worse,

Indeed, pretty much all european clubs except frankfurt and benfica could be considered failures if that is the definition for missing out on muani and enzo fernendez.
Absolutely its laughable. He wasnt perfect but non is but he actually did wel with us.

Yeah i also first posted a link and it didnt get posted either so chose to write the name of it instead,

Logic isnt everyones strong sides thats for sure.

Good to hear that , thanks im doing ok.

        3. @Martin B it’s been atrocious tbh. In some way I feel bad for even being a part of any spat 🤦‍♂️
It’s a big difference having disagreements in other past on here. Before we could have resolved or someone else steps in as a reminder but it’s hard to do these days because no one wants to get caught up in that toxicity.
Anyways at least I got comfort today having a great discussion with A. I think ignoring some folks would probably help. Not as a disrespect but just for my sanity and mental health

          1. It’s been awful, I’ve been here for over a year and recently it just seems like it keeps getting worse. I always like to be positive but there’s a lot of trolls that really get on my nerves and that’s the one thing that takes me off the edge. Hopefully it’s gets better in due course

          2. It has indeed. well i absolutely prefer people just discussing football and accept the differences while people sticks to facts and ovoids trench warfare,
It propably would be the wisest thing ignore some commenters but sometimes its also difficult to ignore posts if they are completely based on misconceptions as we at least should strive towards the truth.

  12. Just consider the following a PSA if it applies to you.

    Get a life.
Do some work, or study. Try to develop your mental capacity.
If you are retired, do some gardening or something. Planting trees would be good.

Instead of exposing your lack of intellect/maturity on online forums and stroking your idiot-egos to idiot-orgasm.

Having an opinion, and having the right to express it, is good of course.
But I would argue that developing your maturity and capacity for thinking before expressing the said opinions are even (lot) more important.

      1. I think everyone (including me at times) needs to have a big deep breath before typing something and give a proper think about it, so the comments don’t become a constant milanisti civil war lol

        1. Personally i have no issues with you Gigi on this website even if we doesnt always agree you are generally always polite with me but sure its always good to take a deep breath before posting ones comments, I try to do that myself but the fact that im a non native english speaker i also have to take my time to write my posts. Off the web im shooting far more from the hip in conversations so i often end up saying something i regret,

          1. Fair, I have no issues with you either you’ve always been respectful and we’ve always had very civil discussions instead of what we’ve seen from others here recently

        1. Nahhh.. he’s full of bull.
I know way back from rossoneri blog.
He’s also one of the people who attacks anyone who disagree with him.
Considering how silly and unreasonable he was back then, no surprise most people disagree with him.

        2. Now he sees what kind of comment section this website has turned into.
He tried to come here on his high horse pretending to be the wisest man on earth.
If you know martin, just martin, not martin bernhard, this ink kid is no difference than him.
Attacking everyone who disagree with him.
That’s why i found it funny and hypocrite when he wrote stuff like that

      1. Ive known ink from several football sites over the years and that is deffently not my experience of him in fact i cant remember you from rossoneri blog and came there for years.
Obviously you might have changed your profile name.

        1. Oh trust me, i’m not gonna make things up for the sake of it.
I have personal experiences with him at rossoneriblog.
He’s no difference with martin (not you, the other one) who just blatantly attack anyone who disagree with him.
I rarely comment there as i was only enjoy reading the comments like from you, milan10, ashraf, and the others.

          1. Well obviously i dont see everything posted but my experience of ink has always been a positive one,
A lot of the people from there migrated over here.
Generally speaking though everyone can have a bad day and say something they regret and then end up in a feud but im sure the great majority can move forward without being vindictive as its pretty much a waste of time.

  13. Everyone knows we missed ( lost ) because of Maldini’s stubbornness they said at first he wasn’t listening to his workmates ,moncada furlani, and lately he started to disobey the owners he was taking our beautiful club for ransom without him we suppose to have, Kolo muani, caiceido, Enzo fernandes, roveire, and could have sell some of our players that left for free

  14. gosh, those maldini haters come flocking this comment section..they dont know many great managers/directors had misses during their tenure smh,go get a life

  15. Theo? Maignan? Tomori? Kalulu? Bennacer? Tonali? Leao? Diaz? Giroud? Ibra?

    Pioli? Scudetto?

To me it seems that Il Capitano gave us a winning team afterall.

    1. Considering where we were when they were appointed, the fact that they got us a scudetto and into a UCL semi final is phenomenal

      1. And it really went as they planned. They had a 3 – 5 years plan to bring this club back up and it worked.

Let’s see if this new team can keep the momentum going. I sure hope so.

        1. Im cautiously optimistic but the one thing I definitely like is the priority they have for expanding the clubs reach and the new stadium, if we can continue to increase the revenue through these things I hope we can compete even more

          1. That’s an aspect I give big credit to both Elliott and Now RedBird. They more or less cleared the books, properly revamped marketing strategy and are serious about the stadium. Building some strong foundations for the future and hopefully one day this club will be selfsufficient and sustainable.

  16. Everyone knows we missed ( lost ) some good business because of Maldini’s stubbornness they said at first he wasn’t listening to his workmates ,moncada furlani, and lately he started to disobey the owners he was taking our beautiful club for ransom without him we suppose to have, Kolo muani, caiceido, Enzo fernandes, roveire, and could have sell some of our players that left for free

  17. Everyone knows we missed ( lost ) some good business because of Maldini’s stubbornness they said at first he wasn’t listening to his workmates ,moncada furlani, and lately he started to disobey the owners he was taking our beautiful club for ransom without him we suppose to have, Kolo muani, caiceido, Enzo fernandes, roveire, and could have sold some of our players that left for free

  18. Alex Ferguson rejected Zidane, and Wenger rejected Zlatan, both far better than Caciedo who really isn’t that good. The two best prem managers of all time…and toe of the very best players of all time.

This is more a tale as to the overinflated panic buying prem. You get Bellingham for 110m! Rice and Caciedo in a normal world are both 40m-50m players…

    It’s a ridiculous and non starting argument….

      1. Well that depends on who you listen to. Wenger wasn’t prepared to look at him without a trial, and didn’t seem bothered when Zlatan stomper off. We all love Zlatan but know how he lies to spin a yarn 😂

          1. 😀 hey drew i actually remember zlatan saying something like “zlatan doesnt do trials” but yeah he always liked to spin his image by his comments.

          2. Hi Martin, Hah yeah he did say that. But in context Wenger was a revolutionary coach at the time, was winning with Arsenal..it was up to Zlatan to convince him but in hindsight it was a huge error of judgement by Wenger

          3. Absolutely but as you said its in a context and surely wenger must have regretted it but from what i can recollect it was early in his career and who knows if zlatan would have become the same player there either because as i remember it was when he was in malmø or ajax, Rather cocky comment though 😀
I quite liked wenger, he didnt take bs from his opponents like mourinho or fergusson and he deffently had a great impact on epls resurgence in the sport and im not even an arsenal fan by any means but they was a force to be reconned with back then nevertheless-

    1. Yes mate, you can’t compare. It’s like when within a week Milan broke the world record for Papin, for Juve to break it with Vialli and then finally Milan broke it again with Lentini. It’s fantasy world

  19. You can’t get them all.

    No blame at all.

We have Theo, Leao… if this article was about how we missed out on them, I would have been hurt, but I can’t always blame where there’s no blame.

Newcastle signed Tonali for €70m, is he worth that? Hell no.

    It’s premier league money.

  20. Oh now whoever becomes expensive might be signed a few years ago lol. Last year it was Enzo. Milan are scouting whole world!!! Next year there will another new big name and all of sudden Moncada would be scouting him and XYZ people rejected the move haha

  21. Oh Caicedo is sold for 110 mil? Lets all get into Maldini hatewagon and stop using our brains. lol

If Caicedo is 110mil by doing LITERALLY NOTHING in EPL, Tonali should’ve been 500mil, AT LEAST. This is just EPL inflation, nothing to do with any SD or scouts. As for Enzo, the exact same thing goes. Enzo’s gameplay is BEYOND PATHETIC in chelsea, nearly unwatchable. The only reason he rose to fame was Messi winning WC single handedly with Arg GK.

I don’t get why people are hating on Maldini so much. I get it, he made some major unforgivable mistakes like Origi. But he achieved a lot as well. He was fired, and that should be the end of it.

The problem was Maldini’s philosophy and Strategy clashing with Cardinale’s. Maldini’s vision and roadmap for Milan was clearly geared towards one thing.. and that is PRESTIGE aka making history in UCL. The whole strategy was based on two things.

-Build a core of players who would carry the club to new heights and sustain them at all costs.
-Add/reinforce this team and the club based on the profits generated from sporting successes and investment from owner.

Clearly, this strategy was inspired by Berlusconi era Milan and geared exclusively towards glory.. such as winning UCLs .. and competing for UCL Trophy every year. Not just that, legendary most successful teams in football’s recent history such as Bayern(yupp era), RM (zidane era), City(peps team), Barca(dinho/messi era), Milan(sacchi era + golden age), Inter (mou’s treble winning team) were and some still are using that exact strategy and So far, Most of the teams who won the UCL or actually made history.. such as Licester winning EPL.. adopted that strategy. In fact, We won Scudetto and went to UCL Semi in such a short time because of THAT EXACT strategy.

It does have a drawback.. Growth is slow but steady. revenue growth is slow as well.. which means clubs finances will not be growing rapidly. If the owner is not a passionate sports fan, they will get disappointed as the revenue will not be what they want, but the club reaches a new height of prestige.

Then the other strategy is mercenary clubs. Clubs that sell core players to add randos because those core players fetch the most values. These ones have historically never went far in UCL. yes there are examples of clubs winning with a completely new squad but NEVER in UCL, only leagues.. even those are rare. Such as last season’s Napoli, everything just worked for them. But guess where they fell flat.. UCL.. Against the very Milan using that old strategy. Of course our run is accredited to luck, But still, we beat some strong teams to get here. Napoli was serie A winners and we were 6th at that time when we beat them in UCL. And Tonali was the player with most chances created in the entire UCL tournament. THAT was no coincidence.

Cardinale’s strategy is the latter. To him, Everyone is a mercenary playing for money and sellable for profit. The idea of a core team is absent here. If it’s required, Cardinale/Furlani will sell the entire team and buy a whole new team. Will we win anything? Maybe, Maybe not. But the club will be financially in a better place, making money all the time, revenue skyrockets, investors are happy, fans are happy.. (Curva sud supports whoever pays them anyway), Gerry is VERY happy, but chances of the team winning anything is very low. It’s a valid strategy. But we will never reach the heights we are used to reaching.

Teams who aim to win UCL, such as Bayern, RM, City, Barca etc.. Only sells players who are surplus to their requirement. Not core ones.

I dearly hope I am wrong and we win UCL, Serie A and Italian cup in this season. But if we take any lessons from Football history, it’s very unlikely that we will be going anywhere in UCL soon. Maldini’s strategy was a proven one, . Yes he made a lot of mistakes, no denying that.. but the roadmap worked. We started winning and hell went up to UCL Semi in 4 years, and we were clearly becoming a force to reckon with in UCL, teams would think twice when they get drawn with AC MILAN, we were on the way to becoming a UCL title contender team.

If you want an example of Gerry’s strategy.. Look at PSG in UCL. Another team of mercenaries. They are financially very solvent and a well oiled machine but.. UCL is out of their reach, even with Messi, NEYMAR, AND MBAPPE. I hope Milan wouldn’t be that kind of team.. but we probably are now. Selling Tonali was a sign of it.. The talks about Selling Mike Maignan is kind of sealing the deal for me that We, AC MILAN, has become a team of Mercenaries.. !

But gotta give credits where it’s due. Furlani did a very good job at reinforcing Milan in positions Pioli needed strength the most. So now.. Pioli has no excuses. I have a feeling he will not last till 7th matchday of this season considering the schedule. I hope we are in touch with Nagelsman unless he has taken a new job that I don’t know about.

    Forza Milan.

    1. Agree with Milan4lyf, EPL always makeup value of players. For example: Harry Maguire – 80 Mil a few years ago – garbage. Now, he still sold 30 Mil to West Ham… Do not believe Moises Caicedo’s price…Do not need to see price EPL pay for players to think about real value of them.

    2. Interesting take. I agree with alot.of it but the mercenary wording is strong lol. Maybe it’s probably where I’m from. But I get the gist of it.
I really would have hoped for one more year of the Maldini slow and steady approach but the owners have other ideas and it was unfortunate. But we’re there now with a team of potentials.

    1. 💯💯💯💯💯💯💯💯 agreed

Everyone is a genius when they have the benefit of hindsight LOL

These Maldini trolls are comical and massively hypocritical

  22. What’s was the probability that these missed targets by Maldini and Masara would have made it as top targets in Milan. If its an easy job let’s see how Milan will turn these new signings to win the champions league and scudetto. Let Maldini rest and move on.

  23. Remember Faildini signed CDK over Enzo

preferred to spend 35m on freaking CDK over buying Enzo and Dybala which would’ve been cheaper and then he comes out and complains that he has no money

Well dude you spend it like cr*p and havent made a relevant player sale in ages

    1. Boulden may i suggest you to go and read the SempreMilan article
“SM: Moncadas advice to maldinis negotiations – milan ready to invest in de ketelaere” published june 14th 2022 on sempremilan.

  24. Caicedo is worth 110 million because he plays in a premierleague team. If he was in Milan or any Italian team then the offers you would get are 50 to 60 million max. Thats the sad reality

  25. I see comment section is full of fake morons.
Last year when we signed CDK, I saw the same people in the comment who were appreciating maldini now calling maldini basically stupid for choosing CDK over Enzo lol. Just show some self respect at least once in your life you morons.
In last summer, nobody new Enzo and if we chose nobody over CDK on that moment, you would be first person to blame maldini.

  26. I see the Maldini trolls are up and at it again now that they have been restocked with ammo.
Logic is a dreadful thing not to have. They can’t let him rest, and their unreasonable bias will not even allow them to see the positives he inputted into the team.

When it’s failure its Maldini. Or as some kids call him faildini. But when it’s success he had help. 🤣😂
Other successful directors who have over the history of the sport overlooked great talents can also be considered failures because of their inability to OWN EVERY SINGLE TALENT IN THE GAME.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️When would the trolls on this site actually grow up and stop allowing childish impulses rule their being??

  27. Your rational does not make sense at all. It is the same situation as if investing in equities. Such investment might prove fruitful or it can go bad. Only time will tell. As always, there is a calculated risk. You must always look at the positive instances as others already mentioned, such as Leao and Giroud. It is useless now to blame people for things that might have gone wrong, since we do not have a magic ball to see what could have happened!!!
