CM: New Milan derby set for Monza goalkeeper after impressive season

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan and Inter could be set to battle it out for Monza goalkeeper Michele Di Gregorio this summer with the shot-stopper having a very good campaign.

As has been reported by Calciomercato.com, both Milan signs could provide a landing spot not far from home for Di Gregorio who is expected to be Monza’s best chance of turning a big profit this summer.

Inter have a more pressing need to sign a goalkeeper as they currently have the 35-year-old Yann Sommer as their first choice. He has impressed this season but is not the long-term replacement for Andre Onana.

Di Gregorio actually developed at Inter but was eventually sold permanently to Monza for around €4m. He now has a market value of €20m which means Monza could be in for a serious capital gain.

Milan are also in the frame for Di Gregorio as the sale of French goalkeeper Mike Maignan cannot be ruled at this point. He has been attracting interest and unless a new contract is agreed on, bids will almost certainly arrive for him this summer.

The focus is certainly still on renewing the contract of Maignan, but Di Gregorio would be a safe and affordable option to replace him.

  1. If inter really want him I don’t see us have any chance… He is their graduate and already said to be a fan. Besides that we will only buy him if Maignan leaves, which mean we will playing waiting game whereas inter can buy him no matter what happen with Sommer, as he is already 35.

  2. Italy has a lot of solid GK and Sportiello is not a bad choice either, which means that even if Maignan is sold, we don’t have to rush the new GK.

That said, the story of Maignan being sold has been going on for a few months, so it’s already likely that management has done its homework and knows what to do (maybe Maignan is already sold, and we’ve already agreed on the new GK and are just waiting the end of the season to make it official… similar to what was done when we planned, scouted and bought Maignan before we told Donnaruma to pack his bags.)
