AC Milan are ready to try and secure the future of playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu by tying him down to a new deal, a report claims.
Calhanoglu had been a divisive figure among the Milan fan base up until the resumption of Serie A post lockdown, but he exploded after by scoring six goals and adding eight assists in the final 12 league games of the season.
According to Calciomercato.com, the priority is the renewal of Zlatan Ibrahimovic but Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are beginning to look at other situations too as a positive outcome is expected regarding the Swede.
Calhanoglu’s contract situation needs attention as his current deal runs out in 2021. There is no immediate rush, but the desire to close something soon is a mutual one.
The Turkey international has put Milan at the top of his list and his agent Gordon Stipic is expected in Milan shortly to negotiate the renewal.
The talk will begin on the basis of an extension until 2024, with the aim of Milan to repel interest from Hertha Berlin, Leipzig and Schalke 04.
The current salary of €2.5m net that Calhanoglu earns will be upped and it is probable that a release clause will be inserted to protect Milan.
