CM: Milan future hangs in the balance for €30m summer signing after torrid season

By Oliver Fisher -

The future of AC Milan forward Rafael Leao hangs in the balance after what has been a difficult first season at the club, a report claims.

It was expected that the Portuguese starlet would take up a spot in the starting XI against Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-final second leg due to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s injury, but the fact he was overlooked is perhaps indicative of the campaign Leao has had so far.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Milan ownership are beginning to reflect upon the 21-year-old’s future at the club, having spent €30million when factoring in the cash sum and the fact young defender Tiago Djalò went the other way as part of the deal.

If before it seemed obvious that Leao would be given time to figure things out, that is no longer the case. Signs of a qualitative leap have never arrived from the former Sporting CP starlet and the 12 games between now and the end of the season will be crucial in proving that he deserves a chance in Ralf Rangnick’s project.
