CM: Signs of growth from Jovic and Okafor could change Milan’s January plans

By Oliver Fisher -

During AC Milan’s final group stage game in the Champions League against Newcastle United, there were positive signs from Luka Jovic and Noah Okafor which might slightly change some plans.

Calciomercato.com writes how Samuel Chukwueze had already shown his qualities with Wednesday’s night’s winning goal and the one scored in the defeat against Dortmund, but now the Serbian-Swiss duo also seems to have started to get going.

Jovic and Okafor – the two forwards who were targeted with criticism for the start of the season for not being up to par – did well at St. James’ Park and the club now expects the growth of both and a leap in quality.

Jovic led a break and then rolled it to Okafor who passed to Chukwueze for the winning goal – a move that was all thanks to the summer signings. In the recent period Jovic seems to have found his groove, with a couple of goals also to his name, while Okafor is back from injury and wants to start contributing.

For this reason the Milan management will evaluate their performances before making large investments in attack in January. The idea, if possible, is to wait until the summer to purchase a striker, while continuing to monitor the possible opportunities that the winter mercato may provide.

Among these there is the road that leads to the Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy, who has a €17m clause but is attracting the interest of several clubs from all over Europe.

  1. It would be a bad decision to postpone reinforcement of our attacking department for the summer. Just because okafor (back from injury) and Jovic and Chuk (on form) are available, does not mean we don’t need more options upfront, especially if we are serous about Europa League, domestic cup, and top 4/scudetto.

We need investment for defense and attack. Simple as that

    1. Yes how will all these players play, you think football fields 15 players now?

Only a dumb club like Chelsea overspends for players in January

  2. (if this is really true and just media rumors):
The most worrying part is that the decision making is based on individual moments. As if there is no clear plan. The same thing happens with Pioli as well. Win (even regardless of the performance) and stay. Lose and get fired. Score (not even playing well) and we are happy. Fail to score, you’re out.
Very wrong approach, it can’t be successful in the long run.

  3. I think getting a midfielder and a defender is much more important than getting a striker. We still don’t have a proper dm and bennacer won’t be available because of ACON

  4. Okafor needs more minutes, as does Jovic and Chuk. Leao not fully fit and Puli and Reijnders could use a break. So rotate, STEFANO! ROTATE!

    1. unfortunately knowing pioli he is gonna start reusing his favourites until oblivion, or somehow start with 10 players that never had time together and expect from them to play collectively and then sub in Leao, Giroud in the 70th minute.

  5. In all lines, Milan’s players are quite good, except for the right-back, left-back and center-back sectors which still need coverings. And of course Milan needs a new HEAD COACH.

  6. Firstly we must consider we are out of CL

If Jovic continues to contribute in a meaningful way, we should wait until summer to decide our striker roster.

Honestly I don’t think the defence is as much of an emergency as it appears.
It is a great chance for Simic and Bartesaghi.
W have Kjaer and Pellegrino back soon.
Kalulu back in February, and Thiaw might be a similar timeframe.

It’s the midfield that is a total shambles, we need a DM – that will directly improve our defense and attack.

Also looking forward to seeing Kalulu back at RB when all are fit, he gives balance to the defense there when Theo bombs on.

I would much rather see targeted signings than massive turnover

It kind of is honestly, you can’t just put all hope on soon to be back players. In many occasions, a player who was scheduled to comeback in a certain date, comes back after that, also Kjaer is too often injured and Pellegrino is too green (because of Pioli). I’d say we need at least one defender in this transferwindow.
The DM is very important I agree.
So this transferwindow we should AT LEAST bring a DM and a CB.

    2. The midfield is not shambles. Once Bennacer is match fit we can really judge the midfield, and we have plenty of options. If we sell Krunic, as it looks like then we can bring in another DM, but the defense is the bigger priority right now. If you want to talk shambles, the defense is in shambles. Unless you want to trust two kids with zero experience and an injury prone Kjaer to go far in Europa and finish top 4. I don’t.

  7. Yeah I take your point, just don’t like signing players for 1 months cover (if kalulu and Thiaw get back).
I guess we are probably going to need a CB anyway, with Kjaer Caldara and either Gabbia/Pellegrino leaving.
Between now and January I really do hope and expect Simic/Bartesaghi to be given a fair chance.

I pity Gabbia he has been messed around. How we could use him now!
