CM: The worrying numbers behind Milan’s defensive record this season

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are not as defensively solid as they were during last season’s Scudetto win and in improvement is needed, a report has highlighted.

Calciomercato.com write that Milan’s defence is not quite as bad as Inter’s, who have conceded 24 goals in 17 league games, but with 18 goals let in so far in 2022-23 the Rossoneri’s rearguard is worse than all the other top-ranked teams aside from their city rivals.

Juventus have conceded 7, Napoli 13, Lazio 15 and Roma 16. Atalanta, with 18 goals conceded, equals Pioli’s team. On Sunday evening against Roma, the Rossoneri conceded their 6th headed goal of the season, which is 35.29% of their total goals let in.

In the 2021-22 season, which ended with the victory of the 19th Scudetto, Pioli’s team had conceded 19 goals after 17 games, which is one more than in the current campaign. It’s the only positive figure, because then the goal difference was +17 (36 scored and 19 conceded), now it’s +15 (33 scored and 18 conceded).

Above all, Milan had 39 points and were one behind leaders Inter. Now, however, they have 37 points and is are seven points behind Napoli.
