Mehdi Taremi of IR Iran

CM: Taremi moves into pole position for the attack – why Milan want him so much

AC Milan seem to have made Mehdi Taremi their number one target for the attack but Porto are putting up resistance, a report claims.

According to Calciomercato.com, the Milan hierarchy believe that Taremi could be their new starting centre-forward and not just a back-up for Olivier Giroud as Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s replacement.

Milan presented a bid worth €13m for the Iranian striker, who will celebrate his 31st birthday tomorrow. Geoffrey Moncada and Giorgio Furlani had the proposal rejected, and were told it will take a bid of €20-25m.

At the moment Porto are not willing to offer any discounts despite the fact Taremi’s contract expiring is in 2024, but negotiations have just begun.

Taremi returned to training today and he is admired by Milan because of his scoring record. He finished last season with 31 goals in 51 competitive games, and he has 80 goals in 147 matches for Porto.

His arrival would exclude that of Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze because he would take the final non-EU spot, but as a player with 45 goal contributions last season he may just take precedent.

    1. Yea, Balogun is not happening for sure. With additional RW, CM, back up left back and Singo needed, we wont have extra 30-40Mil to spend on him.

    2. I don’t understand why we need a fast forward. This isn’t the mid 2000s, most of the top teams these days use wingers and full backs for pace and use a CF who plays as a pivot, press, can finish moves, work in tight areas and can find goals against defensive formations.

      Think Benzema, Kane, Lewandowski, Vlahovic.

Pace is important when playing on the counter, but we’re already quite strong in this area thanks mainly to Theo and Leap. Breaking down low blocks needs to be our primary concern for new forwards IMO.

Giroud is good for this, if not the most reliable finisher, but at 37 he can’t play every game. Taremi sounds like he’s got that skillset and can fit in.

      1. Agreed. Wingers are where the speed is these days. It makes more sense to have two fast wingers than just one fast forward.

        1. If you play like Man City then pace isn’t even that important at all. Just look at Bernardo Silva who plays as a RW and is definitely one of the slowest City players

          1. Yes, they moved the pace to the transition players, particularly the full backs. When a team is as dominant as Man City the emphasis for attacking players becomes their ability to work in small amounts of space and create a breakthrough, not to rely on pace.

Ironically, Haaland is actually very quick but that man’s an athletic freakshow so I wouldn’t use him as an example of anything.

  1. Everyone keeps talking about Balogun.
How many people have actually watched Balogun play? What is so special about him besides being young and fast?
He has had 1 good season, and it happened in Ligue 1, a league that dropped out of the top 5 leagues ranking this past season.
With Giroud’s age and no other striker on the team, Milan needs someone that can immediately produce, not a project. That’s why signing 1 of Taremi, Morata or Scamacca is better than signing some 1 year wonder from Ligue 1 for double the price.

    1. Lol. Finally, I was waiting for someone to comment on this. Same can apply to Musah and Deers
I’m sure none of them have seen them play but run with the transfer news like these guys are the next best thing

  2. I don’t know how good Taremi is, hopefully he turns out good if he joins.
Will he be a game changing striker though?
Bacca also came to lots of fanfare, if people remember.

  3. Why not go for André Silva or Timo Werner? I mean Werner checks as a former Chelsea player and as we all know, Milan is now a team for Chelsea outcasts

  4. I just watched some highlights of his plays on YouTube. I know we cannot believe highlights as they only show the good, so I instead paid attention to his playing style.
He’s a complete forward with good passing accuracy and even range. His postplays and movements are also good. Not speedy, but certainly faster than Giroud.
Despite his playing style, he’s got convincing goalscoring record. We may expect the number to decrease in Serie A, but it will still be good enough.
To me he looks like poor man’s Harry Kane.
