CM.it: Chelsea may test Milan with January Maignan bid face difficult operation

By Oliver Fisher -

While AC Milan continue to try and negotiate a contract extension with Mike Maignan, a report has claimed that bids could arrive as early as January.

According to Calciomercato.it, the Rossoneri would like to extend the contract of the French goalkeeper but there are teams that are keeping a close eye on his situation, given his reputation as one of the best in the world.

Chelsea are the team that are mentioned above all as being tempted to make a move for Maignan, given they have not started the season in the best way and could make some additions in January.

Mauricio Pochettino has identified Maignan as the main target to strengthen the squad according to the source, considering the value of the Frenchman, but the operation is ‘bordering on the impossible’ especially in the winter.

Regardless of the offers that Chelsea may put on the table, Milan do not intend to lose their number one midway through the season. The Blues may test the waters with a bid, but it will be very difficult to bring the Rossoneri to the table.

  1. But Maignan isnt our number 1 but our number 16 in fact we doesnt even have a number one in our squad 😛
Kidding aside if Maignan actually expects to get a salary of 8 mil a year i believe we should consider selling him for something in between 80 and 100 mil euros.

  2. It is absurdly funny how current players keep trying and trying and trying to push the limits of the club despite of having seen what happened to previous players who could not find a common ground with the club. The club let them go and said “Athe best to you. You are not the only player in the world for this position, the club is decades older than you and will probably outlive you. Much greater players than you have come and gone from this club. Go on.” The agent tries to paint a horrendous near future without Maignan but this club is even more fierce than before. Maignan stands no chance. For a keeper expecting 8m per season, I expect less than 10 conceded goals, score and assist at least 5. Can he do that?

    1. Overall i agree with what you are saying here except the part of expecting 5 assist. Maignan has made assists though from what i can recollect as he has made both assists for theo and leao with his long kicks upwards the field 😀

    2. Lol, you can try to make this argument to Mike’s team, but there are richer clubs who are willing to pay more than we can and won’t require him “score and assist at least 5”. He will get 8m at Chelsea no problem, probably 10m. I figure our max offer will be 6.5m. It would make him the highest paid GK in Serie A and still keep him under Leao, as it would be awkward to pay a GK more than a player like him.

      1. If money is everything, go to Chelsea (or Saudi-Arabia). If you want trophies, stay with Milan.

In the end, do people remember players for getting high salaries in higher mid-table teams (or “zero-fcks-given-saudi-league) or winning trophies at one of the most prestigious teams in the history of football? Yeah… Should be obvious to anyone with any ambitions.

  3. I don’t think this is as adversarial as it seems.

Mike sets the price which he is prepared to accept to play for Milan, knowing it will be a gigantic discount of what he can get paid at Chelsea.

He’s given us the time to work out whether to pay that money or cash in during the upcoming winter mercato.

We’re still in a development phase in terms of becoming the powerhouse that we were. We’re going to lose players until we can start wage matching. Even then, we are going to lose players.

There is a 22 year old about 40 miles to the east who is a rare combination of 195cm, elite shot stopping and the capacity to be elite for a keeper with the ball at his feet.

He’ll cost 10-20% of what Maignan’s sale could realise.

Everyone can benefit from a sale.

I salso suspect Maignan’s reputation is still reaping the benefit of that run to close out the 21/22 Scudetto.

Tomori has been exposed since. Kalulu can’t even get a game any more.

There were anomalous things happening during that run and it stands to reason that Maignan isnt as good as the record suggests. Mike is hardly irreplaceable.
