Derbies and direct clashes: Comparing Milan and Roma’s fixtures around UEL tie

By Oliver Fisher -

It was confirmed earlier today that AC Milan will face Roma in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, and there are some things worth noting regarding the league games around the two legs.

After being pitted against Napoli and then Inter in the Champions League last season, the Nyon urn gave Milan a new derby in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, this time against Daniele De Rossi’s Roma.

The Giallorossi reached the final eight after having eliminated Brighton 4-1 on aggregate, and are aiming at at least to replicate the run to the final they managed last season, where they lost on penalties against Sevilla.

The quarter-final first leg will be played at San Siro on 11 April while the second leg at the Stadio Olimpico will be one week later on 18 April.

In the Serie A round before the first leg match, Roma will face Lazio in a very important derby in the race to qualify for the Champions League, while the Rossoneri will host a Lecce side who are fighting to survive.

The following weekend, sandwiched between the two legs, the fixtures are Sassuolo-Milan and Udinese-Roma, two delicate away games against two teams that will be looking for points to avoid relegation.

Finally, after the return leg, the Rossoneri will face league leaders Inter in the derby, while Roma will challenge Bologna in what threatens to be almost a play-off for fourth place.
