Conceicao says he accepted Milan job ‘to win the Champions League’

Sergio Conceicao has stated that he decided to join AC Milan to win the Champions League, which is his coaching dream.

Conceicao accepted the Milan challenge at the very end of 2024, following the sacking of Paulo Fonseca, and since then it has been a tough period despite the Supercoppa win. Indeed, there is already talk of an exit in the summer.

Speaking at the ‘Coimbra Football Congress 2025’ event, as transcribed by Calciomercato.com, Conceicao shared his thoughts on the Milan adventure so far. He admitted that he chose the club to win the Champions League (eventually).

On joining Milan…

“I wanted to go to one of the strongest leagues in the world. My dream and objective is to win the Champions League and for this reason, I chose my current club.”

On the difficulties…

“I knew the difficulties I would encounter. I didn’t choose the players, I had no time to train and there was an obligation to win. However, it’s a historic club that can give me the opportunity to get closer to one of the objectives of my career, after having won so much in Portugal.”

Building from the back…

“Today everyone likes to build from the back. I also like to play wide, but for that you need players who can do it. At Porto, I had a fantastic goalkeeper who made it possible, and at Milan I have one too.”

The flop February…

“In 30 days, we played nine games. We didn’t have time to train, which is extremely difficult and means I can’t give my identity to the team. After winning the Supercoppa against Inter, we drew against Cagliari with an individual error, as happens. Since then, every day they link new coaches to the club.”

It remains to be seen if Conceicao will be able to rescue his position between now and the end of the season. Winning the Coppa Italia and securing a top-four finish might be enough, but a departure seems nailed on for now.

  1. Tactically Conceição is extremely poor. He’s also not choosing the right Center back pairing (Thiaw and Tomori) and he’s not choosing the right midfield pivot pairing (Fofana and Bondo).

These are simple things that anyone can see and fix by observation. Also Conceição plays suicidal high line and that’s why it’s easy for Milan to concede goals even against Leece who haven’t scored in months.

In my opinion he has to go. All of the coaches we were linked with last summer with the exception of Conte and Allegri were all the wrong choices.

These bozos should have let Pioli finish out his last year of contract and then get someone like Italiano if they no intention of replacing Pioli with a coach of the level of Conte or Allegri.

    1. Immediately wrong saying thiaw and tomori should start. That’s arguably our worst pairing🤣 Gabbia and Pav are easily our best CBs and have proven that. Conceicao is not up to the level we need, but northern would Conte or Allegri. Anyone with 5 IQ can see we can’t play defensive football, we’re not built for it. So whybwould you willingly bring in a manager who’s style doesn’t even slightly fit the club? Think

  2. I disagree with you,my suggestion is that if Conceicao give Acmilan third or fourth place let’s give conceicao more chance. To me I prefer conceicao.than Pioli and Allegri yes because Acmilan management, don’t want to give conceicao a chance I’m suggesting Acmilan to give Conceicao a chanve like next season for the coach to set things up I prefer it that way and Sergio conceicao have already given us a super Coppa do you think is easy to win a title for Acmilan.

  3. ‘Chop and Change’ system will only lead us to stagnation. Look at all the successful teams of the 2020s: Liverpool with Klopp; Manchester City with Guardiola; Real Madrid with Ancelotti; Inter with Inzaghi. All these teams gave time to their managers so that they can BUILD SOMETHING. Conte will not build anything, and neither will “Max”.
