Conceicao coy when asked about his future: “There is nothing to clarify”

By Isak Möller -

Sergio Conceicao has been heavily linked with a move to AC Milan in recent weeks, now seemingly the top candidate to replace Stefano Pioli. However, the manager himself wants to wait until the end of the season.

Milan have evaluated several candidates in the last few weeks and Conceico has seemingly ended up at the top of their wish list. Gazzetta dello Sport reported this morning that the manager is focused on the remainder of the season, with a cup final still to play for Porto.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game against Boavista tomorrow, as cited by A Bola, Conceicai was asked about the future. He made it clear that there’s nothing to clarify, while admitting that he’s not clinging to his position at the club.

You renewed with Porto before the elections and now news has emerged about an alleged compensation [if you leave]. Can you clarify?

“There is nothing to clarify. I have been here for seven years and I have already renewed three times. In these seven years, our club has experienced three difficult years of Financial Fair Play, as well as two difficult ones due to the pandemic.

“There were many difficulties, but even so we are equal to our great rivals, Sporting and Benfica, in terms of titles. I think the work has been well done. The opinion of the three candidates and the current president was that I should have renewed a year or so ago. I’m not clinging to my position. I don’t want to talk about it anymore. Respect that.”

It remains to be seen if the talks will be accelerated at the end of the season, with Milan expected to announce the new manager shortly after their final game of the season. In any case, Conceicao is one of the top candidates and he knows it too.
