CorSera: Milan and Pioli without alibis as €50m is now at grave risk

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan failed to follow up their 2-0 loss against Inter in the Champions League semi-final first leg with a positive result or performance, losing to Spezia.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) reports, a reaction was expected from Milan against a Spezia side who had not won for two months, but instead they were dealt another 2-0 loss which now makes a top four spot seem far away.

Once again after a good victory like the one against Lazio last week, a disappointing result comes after in the league. Once again Milan failed to get three points against a ‘lesser’ team in the league, and now there are no alibis.

It is possible that the performance is linked to thinking too much about Tuesday’s return leg against Inter, and if so it wouldn’t be a justification at all but rather a problem.

In addition, even with seven absentees Pioli had to field many starters and nevertheless even with a much stronger team on paper, Milan were unable to get anything out of the game.

If this is the trend and the state of form, a comeback in the Champions League seems very difficult and it is looking like they might not even make the next edition of the competition.

Milan have slipped to four points from fourth place and with only 9 points available – including a direct clash against Max Allegri’s Juventus – the chances of playing in the next Champions League is getting slimmer and slimmer.

The owner Gerry Cardinale had underlined the importance of qualifying and actually not doing so would be a significant economic loss of at least €50m. Now, a reset is needed, hopefully spurred on by the return of Rafael Leao.

  1. Serie A is now like small Premier League.

The most important thing is that stop Juventus from fraud. Also to stop bad judges and VAR in situation where they can help teams like Inter – Juventus.

Serie A is now stronger and lack of strong backup players means that you can lose against anyone.

Yes Milan have better players on paper, but our better players like Origi, Rebic, Adli, Gabbia, Balo Toure, Mirante, Bakayoko, Tatarusanu, Vranckx, and unfortunately Ibrahimovic does not affect Milan game in positive way. Those names are combined 50 million if you sell them, and bring 5 new names and at least 5 best primavera youngsters and put as a goal only to reach Champions League in season 2024/2025.
What is the worth of the “stronger name” on paper when there are no results…

  2. Since I’m sure no one within the club expected us to reach the semis, and therefore earn about another 40m. Shouldn’t the revenue still be in line with expectations even if we don’t reach CL? I’m not saying it’s acceptable but it shouldn’t stop them from strengthening the team

  3. Extremely disappointed, but it is about time the team comes down to earth.
How can you justify a supposedly strong team with players netting hundreds of millions and losing against a lowly team whose worth is in its playing spirit and teamwork despite having a total value that is no more than 3 Milan players.
It is about time that the earnings in sports is decreased substantially.
After all the money comes from the multitude of supporters who can hardly make a living to the end of the month, and from sponsorships of gaming/gambling companies that exploit the weak and destroy their economic living.

  4. Time to invest on proper players and stop wasting money on deadwood players. We should as hell get a whole lot of players and many others should leave. Also, pioli should be looked at. Im not on pioliout bandwagon just yet, but when a team keeps loosing against smaller teams thats on pioli, too rigit coach and with the ability to adapt to different kind of games. But again can we afford a brtter coach?! On paper we have much better players than these small teams. Pioli has failed to figure out how to approach these games. Again, menagment also need to be looked at. After winning the scudetto our team got weaker and instead of getting stronger. Obsolutly failed summer transfer. After the end of the season we will find out.
