CorSera: No comeback and another derby defeat – Milan’s UCL run ends in a bitter way

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s Champions League run came crashing to a halt at the semi-final stage as they were beaten 3-0 on aggregate by city rivals Inter.

As Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews) reports this morning, the words of Stefano Pioli and Sandro Tonali in the press conferences on the eve of the game made it clear that they really believed in a potential comeback.

In the end Milan did not only fail to overturn the two-goal deficit from the first leg but they also lost the second leg too in a game decided by Lautaro Martinez, which sealed the Nerazzurri’s trip to Turkey for the final on June 10.

It is the fourth defeat in a row in the derby for the Rossoneri after their 3-0 los in the Supercoppa Italia, 1-0 defeat in the league and the 2-0 and 1-0 in the Champions League semi-finals.

Milan were not able to score a single goal in these four matches and have never given the impression of being able to worry Simone Inzaghi’s team too much. The disappointment is obviously high, and it stings more that it came this way.

Milan had Rafael Leao back but he was far from his best form and was dangerous on only one occasion. Now, attention turns to the last three league matches which must all be won to stand a chance of a top four finish, but even that seems tough to achieve.
