CorSera: Three-man defence no longer works – Pioli could change formation again

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s struggles in 2023 continued on Saturday night as they were not just beaten by Udinese but they lost rather comfortably too in what was a poor defensive display.

A switch to a three-man defence after the torrid run of form that started in January seemed to have fixed a leaky rearguard after wins against Torino, Spurs, Monza and Atalanta without conceding, but now the Rossoneri have conceded six goals in their last three league games against Fiorentina, Salernitana and Udinese.

According to Corriere della Sera (via MilanNews), the feeling is that the three-man defence no longer works and therefore after the international break it is possible that Stefano Pioli decides to return to the 4-2-3-1.

It is well known that it is his favourite system as it brought the Scudetto win and the nine clean sheets in the last 11 games of last season showed that it could produce solidity.

    1. Now Milan use 3-4-3 or 3-4-2-1.
May be they will use 4-2-3-1 again as Corriere News writes.
Milan may be have to try to use Kalulu or Tomori or Thiaw as one of DMC, and Tonali as AMC.
      And Origi as AMR?

      1. No. Kalulu at RB. Theo-Tomori-Thiaw-Kalulu. That should be our back line in a 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3. It still puts your best defenders on the pitch. And if Saladmaker is playing at RW it means the squad could even change into a 3-4-2-1/3-5-2 or whatever mid-game.

  1. We should stick to 4-2-3-1
We have Mike and Theo back, We have 3 good defenders who can switch between games so no one will be exhausted.
And hopefully and most important, we’ll get Leao back this way.

  2. 4-3-3 would work best atm, with one problem. No decent rw in this club. But Pioli would/will never give up his precious double pivot in midfield.
And Tomori needs to be benched.

  3. I also think 4-3-3 should be given a shot. Krunic can come in as one of the outside midfielders in the middle three. I think Diaz could do the job as RW. We saw him there earlier in the season and he did a decent job. And that was in the 4-2-3-1 where the RW is expected to track back, which he won’t be as much in the 4-3-3. CDK could also be given a run out as an RW in the 4-3-3.

  4. 41212 I think we must try this formation it time we should attack with 2 strikers maigain, kalulu, tomori, thiaw,Theo,DM benaccer RCM Tonali LCM Krunic/pobega CAM Diaz/Dekele RS Leao LS Giroud

  5. Yes the 4-2-3-1 is the best but CDK should be benched used in 89 mins so the pure 10 should be Diaz and krunic because krunic has been impressive so far this season so that’s the bes.then bennecer and tonalli in the double pivot. But Milan should use origi in the no 10 bcos he can’t score by can assist to score

  6. The best formations Mr Pioli can switch to is either 343 flat and three man midfield 433 that way particularly with the latter we would be able to balance the team and make sure every key members of the squad are being deployed on their strength and that’s the only way to go.Thank you
