CorSport: Milan must resolve scoring struggles amid selection crisis

By Oliver Fisher -

When looking down the fixture list before the season started a game against Frosninone at home might not have seemed all that important, but it feels like a make or break game for AC Milan tonight.

As Corriere dello Sport (via MilanNews) reports this morning, Milan have won just two of their last eight games in Serie A and the Champions League, while they come into today’s fixture having lost 3-1 to Borussia Dortmund in midweek.

Among those called up today will be Ismael Bennacer, the first good news at Milan for some time now. The Algerian midfielder is back on track 206 days after his bad knee injury and who knows, maybe in the final minutes he might find his way back onto the pitch. His is an absence that undoubtedly weighed on the Rossoneri midfield and, for this reason, a fundamental return for Pioli’s squad.

Where Milan have had no luck is in defence, a department decimated by injuries. Today the Rossoneri have only one first team central defender: Fikayo Tomori. He should be partnered by Primavera star Jan-Carlo Simic.

However, the Serbian could still start from the bench given Pioli has experimented with imaginative solutions in recent training sessions. One of these could be Theo Hernandez moving centrally alongside Tomori with Davide Bartesaghi deployed as left-back.

But beyond all the talk about tactics, Milan’s real problem remains only one: goals. Pioli’s side are struggling to score and with their best players – Leao and Giroud – out it becomes even more difficult. Neither the Portuguese (injured) nor the French (suspended) will be there today.

For this reason it really is almost the last chance for Luka Jovic: for the moment the Serbian has made eight appearances, but he hasn’t scored for Milan or in general since May 27th and must show signs of life if the Rossoneri management wants to continue to focus on him at least until June.

Pulisic and Chukwueze will also be there to help him, with the hope being that the Nigerian may have finally turned a corner after his goal in the Champions League. The American must regain his early season sparkle.

  1. No experiments Pioli – just play everyone in their positions in back four and add Simic. Theo or Calabria as CB will be a disaster.
Camarda should break his duck tonight and Jovic. Oh and no Krunic please; this is Frosinine not Real Madrid, play Adli..

    1. Sorry but if you think that basically scoring one goal per game in today’s game is sufficient enough that we don’t have a scoring problem and don’t need to invest in a striker – then I’m not sure what to tell you….👀👀😂😂

      1. Shinter is in form and they scored 9 goals in the last 5 games. Merde juve 7 golas in 5 games. So nah. We don’t need a striker in January. People like you seek issues where are none. We don’t need a striker. We have 3 and 2 out on loan. What we dont have is a healthy cb and a proper dm. And competition for theo.. but mostly definitely we don’t need a striker nor do we have a scoring struggle

  2. See our problem is too things the coach should stop using 4-3-3 the coach should use the 4-2-3-1 and play pulisic/Romero more on the attacking midfield then troare should play more on wing to support chukwueze in the starting line up then rejnder and musah should hold the defensive pivot allow cheek to sub Romero then Adli sub rejnder

    1. Mah they should play 343 with musah and theo on fullback tijani and ruben on cm. Leao, puli/sammy on wings. Calabria, tomori, thiaw ( he out now tho) so simic on cb.
