CorSport: Pioli may try Calhanoglu in new position due to Bennacer’s suspension

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan boss Stefano Pioli could give Hakan Calhanoglu a new role on Sunday afternoon when the Rossoneri welcome Hellas Verona to San Siro, a report claims.

Milan are currently on a run of five wins in all competitions which has coincided with Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s arrival. The most recent of these successes was on Tuesday evening, and although the Swede got on the scoresheet, it was Calhanoglu who was the match winner.

The Turkey international came off the bench and made a quick impact, scoring an injury time equaliser to force extra time before ultimately scoring the winner early in the second period as the Diavolo prevailed 4-2.

According to il Corriere dello Sport – as cited by MilanLive.it – Pioli is looking ahead to Sunday’s clash with Hellas Verona at San Siro, and he will have to make do without the suspended Ismael Bennacer.

The Milan head coach could deploy Calhanoglu in the position of central midfield, the paper claims, with the former Leverkusen man having proven that he can thrive centrally during Tuesday’s win.

If Calhanoglu were not be used in place of Bennacer, then Milan would play with a midfield duo of Franck Kessie and Rade Krunic. Either way, the Ivorian’s place looks safe.
