Costacurta names what unites Milan’s signings and what Fonseca wants to do ‘differently’

By Oliver Fisher -

Alessandro Costacurta believes that the AC Milan management focused on one key quality in particular in each of their summer signings so far.

Milan’s first bit of summer business was to sign Alvaro Morata from Atletico Madrid, fresh off the back of winning the European Championship with Spain, and he takes the starting striker spot from Olivier Giroud after his departure.

Then it was time to reinforce the defensive department, with Strahinja Pavlovic coming from Red Bull Salzburg to bolster the centre-back position and Emerson Royal joining from Spurs to fight for the starting right-back spot.

The most recent addition was Youssouf Fofana from Monaco, who should provide a much-needed filter in front of the back four to help Paulo Fonseca’s side in transition.

Costacurta spoke to Sky just before Milan opened their 2024-25 season with a 2-2 draw against Torino and he gave his thoughts on the work done by the directors so far, with Radio Rossonera relaying his comments.

“What do I see differently? An attempt to keep the ball more and an attempt, when we go to press, to concede fewer counter-attacks than we did last year. And that’s where Fofana comes in,” he said.

“I think they went looking for leadership on the market. Apart from Maignan I don’t think there was much personality. Pavlovic and especially Morata, the European champion, have it. He has an attitude that in my opinion not many at Milan have.

“Fofana? He adds strength and seeing him he positions himself well in front of the defence, Milan needed him in that role.”

  1. He has an attitude that in my opinion not many at Milan have.

Costacurta is 100% right about this. It’s crazy to see Morata, who only been a Milan players for days, looked more care about the match than several other players who’ve been in Milan for years.

Showed this club is really lacking leadership. And Leao is also the vice captain now to top that.

  2. Hopefully Fofana will close that gap left by Kessie and Tonali. We need players who will leave their skin behind with every game. Calabria gets wrong footed everytime we are attacked so I hope Emerson will bring much needed competition. Our defensive frailties remain, time to switch things up.

    1. We need both Fofana and Kone. Both can play as double pivot with Reinjders at AM and Pulisic back on the RW.

We need to move Reinjders further up the field.

      1. For me, I think the perfect solution should we sign Kone will be to revert to a 4-3-3 formation which I believe suits our players more, that way we wouldn’t have to alternate players positions to fit into AM.

Leao and Puli will maintain the wings.
Bennacer can be our DM will work perfectly with Fofi and Kone on both sides.
RLC, Reijnders, Musah and Pobega as cover.

This would be my ideal solution though.

        1. Ow gosh people are still talking bennacer and rlc even if we got another DM what nonsense if we get kone, amrabat or any other DM we must forget that two nonsense bennacer and rlc we have better players than them so they must go

          1. You seem not to understand it.
Bennacer tackles really well, I even say he’s a better tackler than Fofi, but Fofi is an overall better enforcer than Benn.

Benn just needs to be fit, he’s an asset to this team.

          2. John, bennacer isn’t DM either AM, he is nothing but useless every time he is in our midfield we concedes tons of goals we blame for that thiow or tomori ever since kassie left the opponent midfielders run over us because of bennacer’s weakness that slow turtle is garbage he is another pobega

          3. It’s madness to compare bennacer to fofana, fofana will beat bennacer in everything they are two different players one is close to world class and another is rubbish

      2. ZionTrain reijnders isn’t AM he is b2b midfielder it’s better we play 433
        Maignan
        Emerson tomori pavlovic theo
        Reijnders amrabat fofana
        Leao morata pulisic
That’s is the best line up

  3. i will prefer a trident of Musah fofana, Reijnders.

    why

they are already in the squad. and we don’t need to spend.

musah as played RB RM RW and we can’t find an absolute position for him but he his raw and energetic.
so why not give him the right midfield wing to operate.

fofana will maintain the middle of the pack to give cover for the defense another energetic and physical profile. and he can scream at musah a lot.

rei, should take the left wing giving is bond with theo and leao. they will make a good trident in the left wing and if they need to change anybody it should be leao.

pulisic should be moved to LW and leao sit some games.
he his the no 1 problem we have in the XI boy can’t shoot and can help defends either. passes are inaccurate
