Daniel Maldini admits father Paolo helped him decide on Monza move

By Oliver Fisher -

Daniel Maldini has admitted that his father Paolo Maldini helped him decide that a move to Monza on loan was the right next step for his career.

As has been announced by Milan on their official website, Maldini Jr’s loan spell at Empoli – which was meant to last untul june – has been terminated ahead of time and he has been sent to Monza for the next six months.

A number of different clubs are believed to have been keen on acquiring the 22-year-old but it was the Tuscan side who won the race. They already have Tommaso Baldanzi in the playmaker role, and thus Daniel Maldini struggled for playing time.

There were some injury setbacks too which didn’t help things, but Maldini ended his time with Empoli having recorded zero goals or assists in seven Serie A appearances, and now hopes Monza will be a good fresh start.

After signing his contract until the end of the season with Monza, TMW managed to get some comments from the Italy youth international regarding the switch.

Daniel, how do you feel?

“Let’s say I already feel at home, the arrival was perfect and I’m happy to be here.”

Does Palladino have a plan for the next few months?

“We talked yesterday but about something else.”

Is Monza a place to relaunch yourself?

“My goal is this, I want to help the team as much as possible.”

What did your father tell you when he learned of the possible arrival at Monza with Galliani?

“It all happened very quickly, we talked and decided that this was the best choice for me. So it was.”

Inter are next, is it almost a derby for you?

“Yes, an important match like any other but it will be special.”

  1. reality here is, he didnt get game time at empoli and he will not get it at Monza. Competition at Monza is much more steep

he has the name but not the skill to back it up. none of paolos kids do. it is what it is

  2. He didn’t not get time due to competition with Baldanzi.

They have been fit to play about 6 games together. While Baldanzi played early in the season Maldini was injured.

In the last 6 or so games Maldini has played though I would not say he has been preferred to Baldanzi.

I can’t believe articles written on this subject don’t mention that the coach who Maldini agreed to play for was sacked. Zanetti a young modern coach was good at developing players. He was replaced with Andreazzoli who is in his late 60s / early 70s and much more conservative.

Maldini fits Monza better than Empoli because he’s right footed (i.e. left sided) AM and winger. Monza plays a 3-4-2-1 with 2 AMs behind a striker. Monza’s 2 AM’s (Colpani and Carboni) are left footers. Pessina plays box to box. Maldini’s competition is Valentin Carboni, it’s not Colpani who is a guaranteed starter and best as the right sided AM. Carboni is a kid and he’s on loan from Inter.

It is completely within Maldini’s grasp to become the left sided AM. It might take a few weeks but it’s a good fit.
