DAZN: Milan at the finish line as Morata gives green light to move

By Oliver Fisher -

Alvaro Morata has given the green light to AC Milan and now the management will look to close the deal quickly, according to one journalist.

The striker position has been a hot topic over the past few days as Milan quickly shifted focus from Joshua Zirkzee – who initially was the primary target but is heading for Manchester United – to Morata.

The Spaniard has a €13m release clause and a willingness to leave Spain, which has helped accelerate the negotiations, and numerous sources have claimed that Zlatan Ibrahimovic personallty spoke with the former Juventus man to convince him.

According to what is being reported by Orazio Accomando of DAZN, Morata has ‘said yes’ to Milan. There was a positive discussion in the evening between his entourage and the Milan management, who are ready to sign the Spanish striker from Atletico Madrid.

Morata scored 21 goals and assisted an additional five for Atletico Madrid this past season, the best goal return of his career, and it showcased his importance once again.

He is currently with Spain at the European Championship and therefore could arrive at Milan as the winner of a major trophy, if they get past England in the final in Berlin on Sunday.

  1. Excellent news, he will be a very valuable member of the squad.

Let the haters hate, Morata is a very very good striker.

  2. IMHO, he’s definitely the best pick on the bunch of names bandied about. At 13M, it would be a crime not to get him, especially with how he seems eager to get out of Madrid/Spain too. He’s not too old, leading his country in Euro Final, knows the culture, knows the language, played in Serie-A before, all positives in my books.

Hopefully this move will work out well for both parties, just like it had for Ibra and Giroud.

  3. For 13m you can do a lot worse, but that’s about where the good news end. People thinking this guy will solve our goal scoring issues are just delusional. His finishing is awful he needs like 4 clear chances to score once. I don’t see an scenario where he’ll end up the season in double digit goals. Jovic will score way more goals playing 1/3 of the minutes.
I would give Maldini a shot instead of this guy. Mark my words this is an Origi situation in the making.

  4. I think I’m in the minority who think this is not a bad signing. I think he is the best striker we’ve been linked to so far including David, Lukaku and Zirkzee and for less than 60M€ I don’t think we get much better. He is not a prolific goalscorer but he also played with some of the most defensive coaches of modern times, and doesn’t have many penalties to inflate his numbers. He is a bit old but doesn’t seem on the decline (he is coming out of his best season goalscoring wise) and does bring experience, some leadership, knowledge of serie A and a resume full of titles. I think the more interesting profiles that should have been considered are Guirassy, Dovbyk and perhaps Guðmundsson. Anything better than that will certainly cost quite a lot and we know that this administration is not going to pay a lot unless they sell and tend to favor 2 or 3 cheap players rather than a single expensive one.
One of the problems is though is that Morata doesn’t seem to be an upgrade from Giroud, perhpas even worse. So all and all, we’re replaced a striker with a slightly worse one even though we were supposed to look for an upgrade in the striking department.
But the bigger problem is that Morata seems to be an opportunity rather than a target. We’ve been linked to Lukaku, Zirkzee and now Morata and they have so few common points aside from being strikers. So it pretty much proves (yet again) that the criteria that our management is looking for for any given position is the price, if X player is a striker (or midfielder or defender) and is affordable, then he is a legitimate target. Hiring Fonseca, a coach reputable for working with what he has been giving, also highlights that.

    1. Among those you named only David scored more than Morata last season, and he played in Ligue 1, conference cup and with Canada while Morata played in la Liga, in UCL and with Spain.

    1. Right on. The fans who are happy with Morata are still living in 2019 when he was 27 while the rest of the world is living in 2024. 27 + 5 do the math. Yes, he could score 20 goals per season but will offer no growth in value. We will not sell him for more than 13m three seasons from now when he will be 35. He could score as many goals as he is able to but the goals better result in some title. Paying 13m for Morata, Morata scores 20 goals, Milan win no titles, fans are proven wrong about Morata. What is the point?

With a CF 10 years younger than Morata, Milan could win no titles but still rake in the profits from selling the player later on when he is in his prime.

Morata simply does not provide growth in value and this transfer is against the ideology of buying low and selling high of Cardinale which he has been singing about in his propagandas.

    2. Well said.

It’s good business for 13M – BUT – Motta should have been IN ADDITION to another younger striker we could have built around – whether that was Zirkzee or someone else. The BOG clubs don’t just have one striker they have multiple starting strikers. Now we just kick the can down the road on the most important position in the pitch hoping Morata can stay healthy and that he can rediscover his form of 5 years ago(or it’s Jovic???? YIKES) …..wishful thinking indeed
