Dest ‘ready’ to start World Cup with USA and brushes off Van der Vaart’s criticism

Sergino Dest will feature for the United States in the World Cup and they will play their opening game tomorrow, taking on Wales. The right-back, currently on loan at AC Milan, is excited about the game.

Dest arrived in the final days of the summer window after Alessandro Florenzi’s injury. Milan secured him on a loan with an option to buy and while the first few months were rough, the last few performances from him have been encouraging.

The Rossoneri are eager to see what Dest can do at the World Cup and the 22-year-old is ready to give his all for USA. Speaking at the press conference, as cited by SempreMilan.it, he stated that there is great enthusiasm in the team.

“Personally I feel good. Obviously, after the last game I was a bit tired, but now everything is going well. I’m ready to play with the team. We are very excited about the game, we are all very concentrated. It’s really important, we will give our all, Dest began.

After Milan’s clash against Salzburg in the Champions League, Dutch legend van der Vaart spoke to Ziggo Sport and had some harsh words for Dest: “I’m a fan of his, but he should not believe in himself too much as a right-back. You are right back for a reason. He can be very good, but he always takes too much on his plate. He thinks he is much better than he is,” he stated.

Dest was asked about this during the press conference and responded as follows: “I’ll be honest: I don’t follow what is said, I just focus on myself and my abilities, then of course I know I have to improve and learn new things. When someone talks about me, nobody does it face to face, so I really don’t know what he said, I just focus on myself,” he stated.
