Di Marzio: The details of Newcastle’s €140m package offer to prise Tonali from Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

The eye-watering figures of Sandro Tonali’s now imminent move to Newcastle United are continuing to emerge with each passing hour.

Gianluca Di Marzio confirms that Tonali is very close to leaving his boyhood club and starting a new challenge in the Premier League with Newcastle as the distance between the clubs over transfer fee continues to shrink.

Newcastle raised their offer to €70m plus €5m in bonuses most recently, getting closer to Milan’s request of €80m, and the feeling is that an agreement between the two sides will be found.

If the negotiation goes through, Tonali will sign a six-year contract with Newcastle worth €8m plus €2m bonuses per season, which is a potential commitment of €60m net in additional to the proposed €80m transfer fee, making it a huge package.

Tonali is currently away captaining Italy at the U21 European Championships, but it seems everything is being worked out regardless and the deal is imminent.

  1. My wish would be for tonali to score with the U21 today lift up his shirt and his shirt saying rossonero till the day i die or something like that 🙁

    1. I wish Tonali return after 5-6 years, bringing Mbappe with him, and they play together as Milan players in the new Milan-only stadium that is more modern but still as large as San Siro.

  2. Damn.
When they make a sequel about the movie The Italian Job, the movie will be about the daylight robbery Milan and Tonali executed against Newcastle.
That’s what happens when a qualified Harvard educated man is in charge of negotiations.
Great for Milan, great for Tonali, sorry for Newcastle and its fans.
Also another proof for the saying “People are as loyal as their opinions”. It’s easy to claim loyalty when you don’t have a better option, but when a better option presents itself loyalty is tested.
And I absolutely support Tonali decision to go for the money. You should only be loyal to family and friends, not to an employer.
Nice Job Furlani and good on Tonali’s agent to secure him a massive bag💰.

    1. As much as i like tonali, he was never extra ordinary on the field.
Sure he’s a milan fan boy, and he’s italian, there’s a weight to that, but i will not blame him if he wants more salary, at least he gives milan profit unlike donaruma, hakan, and kessie.
And he’s still young, maybe one day he will come back to milan when he’s 28 or something.
I think this is still a good business, selling tonali to newcastle for 80m is a great business.
Who’s to say milan can’t find another player like tonali with cheaper price.
I have been bitter before when milan sold sheva, kaka, ibra, t33, now i’m just used to it, especially if it’s a great business like this one

      1. From technical point of view, 80m is a bit too much for Tonali but from non-technical point of view (brand image), selling Tonali is cardinal(e) sin. Milan will be viewed as Dortmund-type club which diminish the brand (this goes against Cardinale’s statement of raising Milan brand).

    2. I don’t see any robbery here, this are the amounts being paid. Arsenal is about to pay 100m for Declan Rice who is older than Tonali but I don’t think better. Chelsea will pay 85m for Caicedo and Tonali matches him imo, so your robbery claim is off the mark.

    3. The amount of money is irrelevant to us – and we consider it great negotiation from our point of view as an equivalent English player I.e Declan Rice will move for in excess of £100m – it’s all about levels ….. but the bottom line is , if both clubs are happy the all is good.

    4. I really don’t wish to respond to such a blatant trolling, but I’ll bite this time.

Daylight robbery? Sorry for Newcastle and its fans? What for? They’re getting a great player – who is classy and never a trouble in the dressing room. He won a Scudetto at 22 and is on the right trajectory to be one of the greats in the future. In another era, he would probably be our own bandiera too. He might not worth 80M now, but if he continues his development, 80M would be cheap or at least reasonable in retrospect. So, I don’t know what you meant by that statement as what I can gather from Newcastle fans in general that they’re excited to be getting him.

80M is an obscene amount of money, especially in the current economic climate, therefore, I understood completely the decision to accept the deal. I am NOT against the deal and I won’t hold it against Tonali if he’s securing the bags. However, I am left baffled by your assessment, it is as if we’re getting rid of Origi for 80M.

As for the loyalty part, I typed long enough, maybe another time.

      1. He could have just posted ‘I hate Maldini and here’s another swipe at him because I can’t make any comments that’s not directly or indirectly related’ and that was that. Such a troll. 80m for prem teams is nothing. The teams coming from Championship to Prem get circa 150m to play with from the League. That’s easy money bro. And besides Newcastle has the richest owner in the world. This is chump change. Not even PSG can rival them. Matter of fact, we might end up seeing MBappe there too 😂

      2. Come on, the guy is definitely not on the right trajectory to be one of the greats whatsoever. Tonali was a slightly above average midfielder, nothing more. The idea that he was some special talent that would’ve been a future Milan great is a myth. He’s one of the most overhyped players in Italy, mainly because a) He’s Italian, and the current generation of Italian players is weak and they need someone to stand out. And B) He was a Milan fan and people have this romanticism towards homegrown players playing for their boyhood clubs. Nothing else.

I, for one, am happy he’s leaving because even though he has done fairly well, he hasn’t been one of our stats and he is one of the players who is replaceable, unlike Maignan, Leao or Theo.

  3. Milan is in debt 600 million what Chinese businessmen cardinale owes to Elliott.

I was writing how they want to sell Theo to capital gain but they managed to sell Tonali even more valuable asset.

    1. Milan debt stand at 12 millions. The 600 millions debt is on Redbird’s account, not Milan! Redbird cannot use the money from transfer to pay their debt unless they take dividend from Milan but that won’t happen as they still need to inject 1 billion into Milan for building the stadium.

  4. “The eye-watering figures of Sandro Tonali’s now imminent move”

I think the correct word is actually “mouth-watering figures”. Someone’s paying a helluva overprice here! 😀 😀 😀

  5. I am absolutely gutted by this. I thought Tonali would be the only player in the squad that would stay at Milan long-term and become a Milan legend. All that’s going to happen now is everyone will want even more ridiculous prices for the completely average players we go for. We’re probably going to end up with Pobega and Krunic in midfield next season. It’s a shame Red Bird don’t fly off and get eaten by a Falcon.

  6. Absolute disgrace from AC Milan and their pathetic owners, massive shame brought this club I’m absolutely furious

  7. if i was the sd, im telling nufc – you cant have sandro but for 80m you can have cdk, origi, rebic, saladmaker & messias..
..but im not the sd. so. put a buy back clause in there at least. say 20m when he enters final year of contract

also, with the funds from above sales & transfer budget, we should get fratesi, sms, guler, baldanzi, chuk from villareal

  8. It’s funny as the Redbird lovers are rejoicing we sold for 80M. It’s a lot of money but as @Andre de Almedia – correctly pointed out above – it’s not really that much when Declan Rice will sell for 110-120M and is older and certainly not any better.

But of course the Redbird lovers are missing the point as @Yelnats24 pointed out. This isn’t about the $$ – it’s about the message it sends to the fans, our players and other clubs – we are OPEN FOR BUSINESS. So fine we sold Tonali for 80M. Now who’s next?. Will those Redbird lovers be happy if we sold Theo for 80M – (that is the latest report – we are listening to offers. Then who is next after that? Mike for 90M? Leao for 110M??

Ok so we sell all 4 players and pocket close to 400M – then what. Do you believe we will be better off as a team? Do you really think Redbird will start buying players left and right – spend 80M or a real STRIKER for once and spend ALL of that $$$ back into the team??? LOL. Ya I don’t think so. That is not the RedBird policy. We will just buy more younger players with resale value and will do this all over again in another 3-4 years.

Also – Just because you SELL doesn’t mean you will SPEND TO ADEQUATELY REPLACE and not all players are so easily replaceable. We achieved success not just because we had talent but because we built a “team” – players don’t take LESS money to stay at a club unless they believe in its vision and direction. That is not so easily replaceable. We will see what direction we end up going in but what I have seen thus far doesn’t inspire much hope right now and I don’t believe Redbird have earned the right and trust of the fans to be given the benefit of the doubt.

    1. They will sell anyone if the right offer comes in. Exactly why I don’t like these people and why Boban was fired. He couldn’t see these people with 0 honor or tradition do their US business things. In the end same happened with Maldini. Of course Poli, dejan and similar guys will be happy, they have not developed as human beings enough to appreciate Tonali as a Milan fan being a long time Milan captain…

P.S. Can’t wait until Theo is sold later in the window, a bunch of top clubs are looking for a LB.

    2. Spot on Juro. It’s more than just the figures. You lose certain technical quality as well as image of the brand. Tonali could have gone on to have the same path as loyal icons like Maldini, Baresi and co. But seemingly, as clearly demonstrated, Cardinale doesn’t seem to like that sort of thing. It reminds me of when Silva and Ibra left for peanuts. Sure we got money for it but who are we replacing them with

  9. The biggest news for me is that Di Marzio was caught slipping. He was late to the party. The Athletic was way ahead of him in the story.

Oh also, I want to point out the genius in Cardinale. He fired the loyal icon for AC Milan early on so that when sold the current beloved players the disappointment wouldn’t be so bad after all..Ammi right boys? 🤣🤣🤣

  10. This site has the most dramatic drama queens I’ve ever encountered. 😀

So Milan might sell one player. ONE. Now everyone is running around and screaming “We are selling everyone, we are selling everyone!! Feeder club, feeder club!!! RedBird lovers! RedBird lovers!”

I’m not going to say the adjective here to describe this BS but I know the donkeylover uses that word a lot.

    1. Napoli got rid of Koulibaly, Hamsik, Mertens & Insigne. Some of them club icons even. They improved the team. Won the scudetto. How about that.

Milan might sell one player. A midfielder. The position where Milan is severely lacking compared to e.g. Inter. Not the end of the world if Milan improves the squad quality. It will be a different story if they sell Maignan, Theo or Leao. That would mean game over. But selling Tonali? Not it. Bellingham was sold for 100M€. Milan gets 75-80M€ for Tonali. FOR TONALI! How f*d up is that?! 😀

      1. Yeah, I would have said the same if they sold Calabria. You will never understand, your parents didn’t teach you the right values when it was time for that.

        1. “You will never understand, your parents didn’t teach you the right values when it was time for that.”

LOL. Swing and a miss. Surely you can do better than that? 😀 😀 😀 😀

          1. No, it was a bullseye hit. Just read what you write. Anyhow, you are also a coward, for the same reason. You need to accept, you shouldn’t. Real coward talks. Fine by me, but you don’t seem to see that. Why would you reply to this one and not the one below? I mean you wrote something stupid and you know it, but you will cherry pick where to reply because you are what I just wrote up there. It is sad people today are like that.

          2. “Anyhow, you are also a coward, for the same reason. You need to accept, you shouldn’t. ”

LOL. Keep at it. You’re doing great. 🙂

      2. But just to respond to one of your ridiculous claims and examples. How old were those players when they left Napoli? Please let me know. How old were they when they came? Have Napoli had offers before they left and why hasn’t it accepted?

        1. “How old were those players when they left Napoli? ”
More or less at their primes but you can google it yourself. 🙂

“How old were they when they came?”
          Google knows that too.

          Have a nice day!

          1. 31 or older. No one was sold in their prime and most of these guys were let go for low amounts as they were behind their best. Only Koulibaly. You have no clue about anything, you just proved my point. Thank you coward.
