Di Marzio: Milan signed Saelemaekers as a winger but believe he is better in another position

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan signed Alexis Saelemaekers as a back-up to winger Samu Castillejo, it is claims, but the club now see a different position for him long-term.

Milan secured their final acquisition of the January transfer window on deadline day as Saelemaekers arrived from Anderlecht.

The Belgian starlet has joined on loan with an option to buy for a potential fee that is being widely reported as €7million, including the cost of the loan and the buyout.

According to what Gianluca Di Marzio has told Sky Italia (via MilanNews.it), Milan see Saelemaekers as a full-back.

Despite having initially been signed as a substitute for Suso – and therefore a deputy to Castillejo in the 4-4-2 – the club already see characteristics in him which make him more suited as an alternative to Andrea Conti and/or Davide Calabria.

This of course stacks up with Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Hellas Verona, when Saelemaekers came off the bench in the closing stages to play right-back.
